Functional finish: Moisture management |
finishes that provide comfort by transporting moisture (perspiration) away from the skin.Effectiveness depends on temperature and relative humidity. In cotton and other hydrophilic fabrics, the challenge is to transportmoisture away while keeping the skin dry. These fabrics absorbthe sweat or moisture, so the drying time for materials is higher. § Examples, TransDRYTM, WICKING WINDOWSTM, Nano-Tex® DryInside, and ScotchgardTM Protector Moisture Management In synthetic fabrics, moisture management is achieved by fibermodification, finishes and/or microporous membranes. § Examples, XDRY® and StainSmart®3 repel moisture from thegarment surface but also transport sweat away from the body. |

Functional finish: Wrinkle resistance |
that property of a fabric that enables it toresist the formation of wrinkles when subjected to a foldingdeformation...”. is affected by cross linking betweenmolecules in a fiber Cross linking agents improve the wrinkle resistance of cottonand other cellulosic fibers with weak bonds. To improve wrinkle resistance, cotton and other cellulosic fibersare also blended with fibers that have strong molecular bonds. adjacent molecules together and pull them back into shape whenthey are distorted Durable press finishes Precure, dip fabric in DP resin, heat it to cure the fabric in flat, nonwrinkled configuration Postcure, dip fabric in DP resin, construct the garment, then cure it to hold pleats and creases in the garment Cannot easily alter a postcure garment New finishes include vapor phase addition of DP resin Finishes have been based on urea and formaldehyde, new finishes are formaldehyde free. Other problems of DP finishes- stiffness, weakness, odor, soiling andaffinity for soil, less moisture absorbent. |

Functional finish: Stain release |
Stain/Soil release is “a finish for textilesthat makes it easier to remove stain andsoil in laundering”. Stain release finishes absorb stains andenhance removal of the stain (e.g., Visa®finished polyester for table linen). Stain release finishes allow fabrics to remainabsorbent; important for table napkins. Nano-Tex Releases Stains® and Visa® Plusand ScotchgardTM Protector Stain Releaseare fabrics with a soil release finish. |

Functional finish: antimicrobials |
Microbes(bacteria, viruses, mold, fungi)multiplyandincrease in numbers when moisture and warmtemperatures are conducive to growth. • Antimicrobial finishes are chemical compounds that killor inhibit microbe (microorganism) growth and preventcross contamination, odor, and degradation. Antimicrobial finishes range from non-durable (bleach) toenvironmentally friendly dyes to biocides used for reducingrisks from biological warfare agents. § Silver, used as an antimicrobial finish, has gained popularitybecause of its low toxicity. Nanoparticles are permanently embedded in fabric, enhancingthe durability of the finish Bleach, a non-durable finish, can be added to the wash cycle. Antimicrobial finishes are applied to fabrics and textile products.Chemicals can be added to the solution prior to fiber extrusion |
|
Functional finish: microencapsulation |
Microencapsulation is mechanism to impart desirable properties that are often difficult to apply using other finishing methods. Itenables the slow release of ingredients onto the skin incontact with the fabric For example, Skintex® microcapsules filled with ingredients such asfragrance, insect repellent, or cooling materials are anchored withinthe fabrics to which the finish is applied. Microencapsulated finishes are of interest to the medical communityas it has the potential to be used for slow release of medicines andvitamins. |

Care labels |
Wash instructions - method of washing (machine or hand),temperature if the item cannot be washed at all temperaturesettings. • Bleachinginstructions, ifalltypesofbleachcannotbeusedonaregular basis. • Drying instructions must include method (tumble dry,dry flat, orhang dry) • Ironing instructions required only if an item needs ironing on aregular basis. Ironing temperature is required if the item cannot beironed at all temperature settings. • DryClean helps tell how to care for garment, helps decide if you want to purchase it or not Wash and dry instructions, if you can iron and how, if you need to dry clean |
