What are tetracyclines?
Tetracyclines are broad-spectrum antibiotics that inhibit micro-organisms growth by preventing protein synthesis
What are some examples of tetracyclines?
-Tetracycline (Sumycin)
-Doxycycline (Vibramycin)
-Minocycline (Minocin)
What are tetracyclines used for?
-Topical and oral treatment for acne vulgaris
-Rickettsial infections such as typhus fever, or Rocky Mountain spotted fever
-Infections of the urethra or cervix caused by Chlamydia Trachomatis
-Lyme disease
-Anthrax
-H pylori infection (GI)
What are some possible adverse effects that may occur with tetracyclines?
-GI discomfort (cramping, esophageal ulceration - doxycycline and minocycline may be taken with meals - do not take drug at bedtime to reduce esophageal ulceration)
-Yellow/brown tooth discoloration (contraindicated in children less than 8)
-Photosensitivity
-Suprainfection in the bowel (diarrhea, yeast infections of the mouth)
-Dizziness (lightheadness with minocycline)
Are tetracyclines taken with or without meals?
Advise clients to take tetracyclines on an empty stomach, generally 1 hour before or 2 hours after with a full glass of water
