what are DTRs?
involuntary , predictable, specific response to stimulus.
what are DTRs dependent upon?
intact reflex arc ( sensory receptor, afferent neuron, efferent neuron and responding to muscle.
what type of pathway do DTRs travel?
monosynaptic
what happens when DTRs go through stretch sensitivity?
stretch sensitive to afferents of neuromuscular spindle produce a muscle contraction in response to quick stretch stimulus.
how is a motor response achieved?
in response to sensory stimulation. when tendon is stretched , elicits a muscle contraction. this assess the integrity of the nervous system
how are DTRs tested ?
with a reflex hammer
what are the DTR test procedures?
pt should be relaxed (no muscle cont), muscle is placed on slight stretch, reflex hammer taps the tendon, immediate response happens, both sides should be tested, reflex then graded.
how are DTRs graded?
from hyporeflexia to exaggerated (hyperreflexia)

0=no response
1+=diminished response
2+=active normal response
3+=brisk/exaggerated response
4+=very brisk/hyperactive; abnormal response
when there is difficulty eliciting a reflex , what techniques can be performed?
reinforcing techniques that cause distraction
UMN lesions cause what response to DTR?
increase
LMN lesions cause what response to DTR?
decrease
Jaw DTR
Inn: CN V

R: jaw rebounds and closes
Biceps tendon DTR
Inn: C5-6 spinal level

R: contraction of the biceps muscle
Brachioradialis tendon DTR
Inn: C5-6

R: elbow flexion and/ or forearm pronation
Triceps tendon DTR
Inn: C7-8

R: elbow ext. or contraction of the triceps muscle
Patellar tendon DTR
Inn: L3-4

R: knee ext
Achilles Tendon DTR
Inn: S1-2

R: plantar flex. of foot
what are superficial cutaneous reflexes?
light stroke applied to skin

brief contraction innervated by same spinal segment

Ex: Babinski, abdominal reflex
when is the babinski test primarily performed?
present with infants until 2 years. if positive in adults, that is a sign of a brain injury.
how is the Babinski performed?
stroke lateral foot across metatarsal heads-toe ext
