Charlemagne

Charlemagne is Pepin’s son who divided the Frankish kingdom in 768 with his brother, Carloman, He and his brother continued to rule their divided kingdoms until 771, when Charlemagne’s brother dies. Charlemagne then gains full power of the Franconians. During Charlemagne’s reign, he had a mission to unite all Germanic people into one kingdom and to convert his subjects to Christianity.

The Vikings

The Vikings were a group of invaders from Scandinavia. They migrated to England, Ireland, France and eastern Europe due to a food shortage in the 800’s. Their government consisted of kings and nobles but was surprisingly democratic for its time. They were known for pillaging the weak and trading with the strong. Their customs were mainly centered around god-heroes.

Feudalism

a political system in which kings and powerful nobles granted land to other nobles in return for loyalty, military assistance, and services. firmly established in northern France by the end of the 900’s. become the way of life throughout most of western Europe by the mid 1000’s. fell during the French Revolution

William the Conqueror

king of England known for importing feudalism. Doomsday Book to determine taxation. laid down the foundation of a centralized government.

King John

unfair with laws. nobles became tired of his laws and made him sign the Magna Carta. if he didn’t sign it, he would be killed and overthrown.

Magna Carta

the basis of British Constitution. written to protect the nobles from wrongful rulers such as King John. stated that no one was above the law, including the king. King John signed it in 1215.

Parliament

had power to refuse to agree to certain taxes imposed by the king.

The Crusades

first was about peasants and European soldiers fighting against Muslims to take over Israelsecond was France and Germany getting their armies to attack Syria stronghold of Damascus, with an army of 50,000, in Jerusalemthird was with Germany and France in Jerusalem to take over Egypt

Black Death

3 types: Bubonic, Pneumonic, and Septicemic. transmitted by rats and fleas. took ⅓ of Europe’s population.

clergies were at the top, peasants were at the bottom. women started to be treated with respect.

fought in the 100-Year’s War.

The Mongols

able to conquer vast, heavily populated areas with superior military technology and battle tactics. invaded Japan, Europe, China, Russia, to name a few.

Korea

China controlled the peninsula for much of Korea’s history, and therefore they greatly influenced political and cultural development in Korea. Koryo dynasty took place during the Three Kingdoms Era, in which the Baekje, Silla, and Goguryeo Kingdoms were in power (918-1392).

Japan

Buddhism is the main religion as of today. the old main religion was Shinto. adopted Chinese writing around 405 A.D. & adopted Buddhism from China. had ninja and Samurai warriors.

The Great Wall of China

built as early as the 7th century BC. The purpose of building it was to protect people and territory from invasion.

History of Africa

origin of the Bantu language was in modern-day southeastern Nigeria. oral tradition = poems, songs, or stories passed down in words through generations, used as sources of information and to preserve memory of great events.

Mayans

believed to have vanished around 900 AD. earliest settlement around 1800 BC. planted crops (corn, beans, etcetera). pyramids were built with steps.

Aztecs

strongest group that fought Mexico. dominated by military. believed in sun god and war god. practiced human sacrifice. died out because of the Spanish in the 1500s.

Toltecs

built pyramids. extended trade more than the Mayans. spread the worship of their god, Quetzalcoatl. practiced human sacrifice.

Incas

“children of the sun”. kept record by Quipu (knotted string). advanced greatly in medicine.

Sui Dynasty

succeeded in reuniting China in 589

Tang Dynasty

early Tang rulers defeated the invading Turks to the north and west and expanded China’s borders even further to the west. capital was Changan, biggest city in the world during the 700s and 800s - made contact with Indian and Muslim empires & many ethnicities lived in the capital. in 906 the dynasty was overthrown

Song Dynasty

Khitans took over this dynasty. around 1050, the population skyrocketed (100 million people).
