What is the first phase of mitosis, and what does it do?

Interphase:

Cell functions, grows, and
prepares for mitosis.

What is the second phase of mitosis, and what does it do?

Prophase:

The chromatin condenses
into chromosomes.

What is the third phase of mitosis, and what does it do?

Prometaphase:

The nuclear membrane
breaks up and the
centrioles get in position.

What is the fourth phase of mitosis, and what does it do?

Metaphase:

The chromosomes line up in
the nucleus and spindle fibers
attach to their centers.

What is the fifth phase of mitosis, and what does it do?

Anaphase:

The chromosomes are pulled
apart as the centrioles are reel
in the spindles.

What is the seventh phase of mitosis, and what does it do? Also, what is the other action that the cell does, and what does that do?

Telophase:

The nuclear membrane reforms and the chromosomes unwind.

Cytokinesis:

The cell membrane pinches and the whole cell is divide in two.

What is the purpose of Mitosis?

Cell division is necessary for growth and repairs.

How many chromosomes are present in
prophase I?

92 individual (46 pairs)

How many chromosomes are present in one
of the cells after telophase II?

23 individual

What is the first phase of meiosis and what does it do?

Prophase I: The nuclear membrane dissolves and
homologous (same) chromosomes pair up and
“cross over”.

What is the second phase of meiosis and what does it do?

Metaphase I: Homologous (same)
chromosomes line up in pairs.

What is the third phase of meiosis and what does it do?

Anaphase I: Homologous (same) chromosomes
are pulled to opposite centrioles.

What are the two phases that occur after Anaphase, and what do they do?

Telophase and cytokinesis I: The spindles retract,
nuclear membrane reforms, chromosomes stretch out,
and the cellular membrane is divided into two cells.

What is the purpose of Meiosis.

(Bonus: don't laugh. If you laugh, you're immature. We're in seventh grade now. Grow up.)

To produce
haploid (unpaired chromosome) sex cells.
