What is meant by children with emerging language?
-children whose DEVELOPMENTAL level is 18-36 months (can be any age)
-period where conventional words are beginning to take shape and used to communicate
Do children under 3 that are born with risk factors (Downs, FAS) have to be screened to be eligible for services?
NO
What are 2 screening measures that help SLPs figure out if further communication evaluation is needed? How/what are they?
1) MacArthur Bates Comm. Dev. Inventory
2) Language Development Survey
-Both focus on vocab size & are parent report measures
What has the MacArthur been effective in identifying?
-toddlers w/ low language skills in both Spanish AND English
Are there any mandates for universal screening for toddlers with language delay?
NO
Does everyone agree that an otherwise typically developing child who is slow to talk/talks very little needs intervention?
NO
Should a child with delay in cognition, motor, & other areas be evaluated?
YES
When should we intervene with toddlers?
-Decision should be based on an accumulation of risk factors
-cog. deficits, hearing impairments, social problems, family dysfunction, family history of lang. problems =highest prioritiy for intervention
What is the goal of intervention at the toddler level?
(level of prevention)
Secondary prevention
OR
minimizing the effects of the delay on language aquisition
In general, how many areas must a toddler show impairment in to be eligible for services?
2
Do expressive and receptive language constitute 2 areas of impairment?
depends on the state to state
According to Paul, what is the best approach to take w/ late talkers w/ no additional risk factors?
-provide parent training in facilitation techniques
How can SLPs help with transitioning of services from early intervention to preschool?
-provide fam w/ info & support
-work with team members of both programs to prepare timely transition plan
-share info/actively help w/ appropriate accommodations, resouces, developmentally corresponding activies
What is involved in family centered practice for toddlers?
-finding out what parents expect from the program & discuss what is reasonable
-include family's assessment/wording in report
-include MULTIPLE ways of fam involvement including direct involvement
-work w/ fam to choose a natural environment
Why is family centered practice for toddlers important?
-the home is where children spend most of their time/are an extention of their fam=program must be fam centered to succeed
How many communicative acts per minute do 18 month olds produce?
2 (in an interactive sample)
-ususally to request objects/action, establish joint attention, or engage socially...usually produced w/ gestures or vocalizations NOT words
How many communicative acts per minute do 24 month olds produce?
5-7 comm. acts/min
-majority of acts words but still use some nonverbal comm.
What is the purpose of symbolic play assessment?
-to decide if the child has the "prerequisite" cog. skills for learning lang.
-provides for a nonliguistic way to assess a child's lang. performance
-help to decide the activities, materials, content to maximize child's particpation/learning b/c play is the most natural setting
What is the relationship b/w play and cognition?
-certain behaviors observed in a child's play & gestures often go along w/ particular cog. development
What is the relationship b/w play and cognition?
-certain behaviors observed in a child's play & gestures often go along w/ particular cog. development
What is the most natural context for language learning?
play
Are gestures part of symbolic behavior?
Yes
What are the components of a communication assessment for children with emerging lang.?
See chart pg. 290

*NOTE: it is important to have a fairly independent assessment of nonverbal abilities & language
What instruments/how does one conduct an emerging lang. communication assessment?
1) standardized/formal tests

2) according to Paul informal test
according to Baharav list your specific test like developmental scale or criterion. She HATES use of informal
Why is emergent literacy so important (in a nutshell)?
no matter what the child's cognitive abilities if even minimal writing & reading skills can be developed it greatly increases the client's opportunity for communication & independent living
What are some literacy-related activities beyond just reading a book?
-talking through your day (ex. when you're shopping)
-display things in print
-be sensitive to culture (ex. some cultures are more oral story tellers than readers)
