Limbic System

A section of the brain that is known as the major system for emotions: amygdala, hippocampus, and hypothalamus.

Amygdala

A tiny part of the brain (part of the limbic system) that controls emotions, particularly fear and anxiety.

Hippocampus

A brain structure (part of the limbic system) that is a central processor of memory, especially memory for locations.

Hypothalamus

An area of the brain (part of the limbic system) that responds to the amygdala and hipposcampus by creating hormones that activate other parts of the brain.

Cortisol

The primary stress hormone, which can flood the brain and destroy part of the hippocampus. Some cortisol is necessary and needed for development, however.

Motor Skills

Develop from myelination of the corpus callosum, extensive active play in the proper environment, and older people demonstrating movements that children are trying.

Fine Motor Skills

Harder to master than motor skills. Examples: whistling, writing, cutting, tying shoes laces, and art.

Dangers of early childhood

Lack of impulse control and their curiosity might cause them to do something dangerous (play with fire, jump, run, or climb and get hurt).

Primary prevention

Change overall background conditions. Sidewalkds, speed bumps, streetlights, traffic circles, car safety improvement, laws.

Secondary prevention

Actions that prevent harm in high-risk situations like a car hitting a pedestrian. Stop signs on buses, salt on icy roads, "this road may be icy" signs, etc.
