A log that tracks events that are related to applications running on the computer. Can be viewed using the Event Viewer utility.
APPLICATION LOG
An Active Directory restore option using NTDSUTIL that replicates restored information to other Domain Controllers in the domain, overwriting their copy of the restored item
AUTHORITATIVE RESTORE
A Windows feature that allows an administrator to restore server configuration settings in the event that a system cannot be repaired using other methods such as safe mode or last known good configuration.
AUTOMATED SYSTEM RECOVERY (ASR)
The tool built in to Windows XP and Server2003 that enables users to back up and restore their data and system configurations in case of a hardware or software failure.
BACKUP UTILITY
Text file accessed during the Windows Server 2003 boot sequence that is used to build the operating system menu choices that are displayed during the boot process. It is also used to specify the location of the boot partition.
BOOT.INI
Recovery console command used to rebuild a missing or corrupt boot.ini file
BOOTCFG
Command line utility that installs the Recovery Console on a target machine.
CMDCONS
A backup type that backs up all the files that have been modified on the day the backup is performed. The archive attribute is not cleared on the files that have been backed up.
DAILY BACKUP
A method of backing up selected files that have been created or modified since the last full backup but does not clear the archive attribute.
DIFFERENTIAL BACKUP
A Windows Server 2003 Advanced Option menu item that is used by Server computers that are configured as domain controllers to restore Active Directory. Not available on Server computers configured as member servers.
DIRECTORY SERVICES RESTORE MODE
An option in Windows that allows you to restore a previously used driver after a driver has been upgraded. This option provides an easy mechanism for restoring a driver if the upgraded driver does not work properly.
DRIVER ROLLBACK
A system utility that displays one of three event logs: Sysytem, Security and Application, wherein logged or audited event appear. This is often the first stop when monitoring a system's performance or seeking evidence of problems, because it is where all unusual or extraordinary system activities and events are recorded.
EVENT VIEWER
Recovery Console command used to repair the master boot record of a computer's boot partition.
FIXMBR
A method of backing up all selected files and marking them as being backed up.
FULL BACKUP
A method of backing up selected files that have been created or modified since the last normal or incremental backup. these files are marked as being backed up.
INCREMENTAL BACKUP
An advanced startup option that you can use to recover a system from failed Windows Server configuration changes.
LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION
The default when performing an Active Directory restore. The Domain Controller accept all Active Directory changes from other Domain Controllers- changes that were made after the backup was created.
NON-AUTHORITATIVE RESTORE
A command-line tool that provides management facilities for Active Directory Domain Services. You can use the 'its ' commands to perform database maintenance of ADDS, manage and control single master operations, and remove metadata left behind by domain controllers that were removed from the network without being properly uninstalled.
NTDSUTIL.EXE
A command-line interface that provides administrative tools useful for recovering a system that is not booting correctly. It allows a user to view disk volumes, format drives, read and write data and perform other administrative tasks. Very useful for recovering and repair a damaged operating system.
RECOVERY CONSOLE
A mechanism for requesting help for x86-based computers through Windows Messenger and email, or by sending a file requesting help.
REMOTE ASSISTANCE
A tool for Windows that allows you to take control of a remote computer's keyboard, video, and mouse. This tool does not require someone collaborate with you on the remote computer. While being accessed, the computer remains locked and any actions performed remotely will not be visible to the monitor attached to the computer.
REMOTE DESKTOP
An advanced boot option that allows a Windows Server 2003 system to be booted with minimal services or drivers loaded, typically used for troubleshooting or diagnostic purposes.
SAFE MODE
Tracking file that logs events that are related to Windows Server 2003 operating system.
SYSTEM LOG
A utility in Windows ME that enables you to return your PC to recent working configurations when something goes wrong.
SYSTEM RESTORE
The set of data that is critical to the operating system booting and includes the Registry, the COM+ registration database, and the system boot files.
