Syndrome characterized by severely reduced immune system function and numerous opportunistic infections. Results from infection with HIV.
acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
The stage in an infection that is characterized by relatively unnoticeable, or absent, symptoms of illness.
asymptomatic
A sexually transmitted disease caused by infection by a bacterium, for which the disease is named. . Often without symptoms, but a primary cause of pelvic inflammatory disease.
chlamydia
General term for treatment with at least three different anti-HIV drugs, from two different classes of drugs. The therapy of choice for HIV patients. HAART is a specific example of this type of treatment.
combination drug therapy
Physiological and morphological changes that occur in children born to women with active syphilis infection.
congenital syphilis
An externally visible symptom of genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The most easily recognized, external sign of HPV infection, although less than 1% of people infected with HPV develop this condition.
genital warts
A sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
gonorrhea
A general term for inflammation of the liver, often caused by a viral infection.
hepatitis
A sexually transmitted virus that causes liver inflammation. Can be prevented via immunization.
hepatitis B virus (HBV)
Either of two viruses that infect the skin and nervous system, causing recurrent outbreaks of blisters. Often transmitted by intimate contact.
herpes simplex virus
A multi-drug cocktail that suppresses HIV replication in the body and greatly extends the asymptomatic period of HIV infection. A type of combination drug therapy.
highly active retroviral therapy (HAART)
Characterized by the presence of HIV-antibodies in the blood.
HIV positive
The viral agent identified as causing the transmission and symptoms of AIDS.
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Any one of a large number of viruses that cause warts. Several are sexually transmitted, and some are known to cause anal and cervical cancer.
human papillomavirus (HPV)
The practice of having only one sexual partner.
monogamous
Infectious diseases that occur only when a weakened immune system allows access.
opportunistic infections
Infection of the internal reproductive organs of a woman as the result of an untreated sexually transmitted disease.
pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Bloodsucking insects that infest pubic hair. Commonly transmitted sexually.
pubic lice
A virus that contains RNA as its genetic material and that uses the enzyme reverse transcriptase to generate DNA upon infecting a cell.
retrovirus
The production of DNA by transcription of viral RNA.
reverse transcription
Any of a number of diseases caused by a sexually transmitted infection.
sexually transmitted disease (STD)
Infection by a bacteria, virus, or other organism that is transmitted by sexual activity.
sexually transmitted infection (STI)
A sexually transmitted disease caused by infection by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.
syphilis
A sexually transmitted disease caused by infection with the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis.
