What is an act?

A law.

What does boycott mean?

To protest by refusing to use or buy a good or service.

What is a delegate?

A person who represents others at a convention or conference.

What was the First Continental Congress?

The meeting of delegates from 12 colonies held to present complaints to King George III, to set up a boycott of British goods, and to arrange a second meeting if needed.

What does import mean?

To bring into a country, especially for sale.

What is a massacre?

The murder of several or many people who cannot defend themselves.

What is Parliament?

The lawmaking part of the British government, similar to Congress in the U.S.

What is a proclamation?

An official public announcment.

What does protest mean?

An action that shows disapproval or objection to something.

What does repeal mean?

To cancel, or undo, a law.

What is taxation without representation?

The colonists were being taxed without having representatives in the British Parliament.

Who was Crispus Attucks?

The first victim of the Boston Massacre. He might have been an escaped slave.

What were the Intolerable/Coercive Acts?

In 1774, shortly after the Boston Tea Party, The Coercive Act said the Boston Harbor would be closed to all trade, the Royal Navy formed a blockade around Boston Harbor, the state of MA would have to further quarter soldiers, and General Gage, a loyalist, was made Governor of Massachusetts.

What were the Townshend (Town-send) Acts?

In 1767 the Townshed Act was passed, taxing paper, paint, lead, glass, and tea.

What was the Boston Massacre?

On March 5th, 1770, a crowd gathered at custom's house and Colonists begin to throw things at soldiers. Captain Preston told the soldiers not to fire, but someone shouted "Fire!" so the soldiers fired. Five people died and six were injured.

The image is of the Boston Massacre. Paul Revere created the engraving, but this is not what actually happened. The engraving shows the soldiers shooting at a peaceful crowd, but really, the crowd was fighting back. The image infuriated the Colonists.

What was the Boston Tea Party?

In 1773, the Tea Act was passed, and it created an uproar in the Colonists. In December of 1773, several Colonists dressed as Mohawk Indians and boarded a ship, and dumped 342 crates of tea from the British East India tea company.

What was the French and Indian War?

The ten year (1754-1763) war between France, American Indians v.s. Great Britain, American Indians, Colonists over the Ohio River Valley. Great Britain's side wins, but Britain is left in HUGE debt.

What was the Proclamation of 1763?

The Colonists wanted to build on the newly won land from the F/I War, but the American Indians thought they would ruin their way of life, so they attacked. 2,000 were killed. Great Britain kicked the Colonists off the land and gives American Indians much of the land west of the Appalachian Mountains.

What was the Stamp Act?

In 1765, British Parliament passed the Stamp Act, which taxed paper goods. The Colonists boycotted and protested, so Parliament repealed the tax in 1766.

What was the Declaratory Act?

In 1767, England said it had the authority on all the laws passed on the Colonies.

What was the Tea Act?

In 1773, the Tea Act was passed, saying the Colonists could only buy tea from the British East India Company.

What was the First Continental Congress?

Taking place from September to October 1774, delegates from 12 colonies attended the First Continental Congress was held to discuss complaints to Great Britan. The angry delegates agreed to fight against the Intolerable/Coercive Acts.

What was the Quartering Act?

In 1765, the Quarting Act was passed, stating that if a British soldier stationed in the Colonies knocked on your door, you had to feed, clothe, transport, and give the soldier a place to sleep.
