Rules for safe roadway hiking.
1. Hike facing oncoming
traffic
2. Wear reflective or light
colored material
3. Use a flashlight at night.
4. Hike single-file.
5. Never Hitchhike
Rules for safe trail hiking
1. Stick to the trail.
2. Watch where you place your
feet.
3. Use bridges when crossing
water.
4. If you must wade, unfasten
your waistbelt for safety.
5. Detour around unsafe
areas.
Staying found
1. Mark your trail on a map.
2. Study the map to become
familiar with your route.
3. Know what landmarks you
will pass on the trail.
4. Use a map & compass to
pinpoint your route.
5. Look back to see what the
trail back looks like.
If you get lost

Stay calm--Try to relax and don't panic
Think--how did you get where you are?
Observe--what is familiar around you that you can pinpoint on your map.
Plan--mark the path you are taking with markers (rocks broken branches. Use your compass to move in a familiar direction
If that won't help STAY PUT.
