Side Light
Light that comes from above and to the side. Sidelight creates a more extreme modeling and accents arm and leg movement.
Vom
An entrance into the auditorium that is next to raised seating
Halogen
the gas used in a stage lighting lamp
Back Light
Light that comes from above or below and behind. Back lighting creates a halo effect on the performers' head and soulders. It also helps to create a sense of depth on stage.
Lobby
The area outside of the auditorium where the audience waits to enter the seating area.
Scenic Ground Row
Hard scenery placed in front of a ground row to mask the light source.
Catwalk
Area for hanging lights above the audience- usually enclosed
Border
Horizontal masking usually made of black velour
Leg
Vertical masking usually made of black velour
Apron
The portion of the stage from the plaster line to the the downstage edge of the stage
Mezzanine
The audience portion of the theater that is in the rear of the auditorium and is slightly raked
Focus
To aim a lighting fixture or to adjust a fixtures beam
Aisles
The space between the rows of seats for audience egress

Soft backdrop made of muslin or canvas

The first five rows of seats
Fly Rail
The area of a wing from which all the pipes/battens are moved
Deluge System
Hydraulic system to prevent fire from passing into the house or onto the stage
Line Set
A round piece of steel that is suspended by wire rope
Loading Gallery
The area above the stage where counterweight is added to a line set to balance the load
Arbor Pit
Area below the stage floor in which the arbor travels

Too much weight on the arbor

Single Purches
Rigging system in the PAC. For every pound of weight you put on the pipe you must put a pound of weight on the arbor
Orchestra Pit Cover
The removable part of the stage which lays above the portion of the auditorium where the orchestra sits and plays during a play
Booth/Control Booth
The room at the back of the auditorium where lighting and sound are operated during a play
Scrim
A loose weave piece of fabric. used to create a dream like feeling
Checking Weight
Testing the line set to make sure the correct amount of weight is on the arbor
Pipe Coming In
The load is moving towards the stage
Pipe going out
The load is moving towards the grid
Fly Space
The area in which line sets travel
Cross Over
The most upstage area where the actors cross from one side of the stage to the other out of sight of the audience.
Masking
Soft or hard goods that hide the back stage areas from the audience
Pipe Weight
The amount of stage weight that stays on the arbor to counter balance the line set. In the PAC pipe weight is painted yellow.

All legs, borders, and drops made of fabric
Plaster Line
An imaginary line just upstage from which all measurements in the theater are taken
Arena
A theater with the seating arrangements all around the stage
Thrust
A stage arrangement where the audience seating is 3/4 around the acting area
Black Box/Flexible
An empty space in which the audience congiguration and acting area can be arranged to suit the needs of the production
Front Light
The light that comes from the front. It is generally used for visibility and color washes
Follow Spot
A lighting instrument used to follow performers onstage
Main Curtain
The curtain that opens and closes at the end of a scene or act
Back Line Out
Pulling down on the back line of a fly rail allows you to move the load to the grid
Box Boom
A type of lighting position located on the side walls
Masking
Soft or hard goods that hide the back stage area from the audience
In One
The entrances on to stage or off of stage that is closest to the proscenium
Front Line In
Pulling down on the front line of the fly rail that moves the load to the stage floor
Grand Border
Horizontal masking found closest to the proscenium used to mask the electrics

Cheat Sheet
A smaller version of the lighting plan, used by the lighting designer during the lighting plot
Parabolic Aluminum Reflector (PAR)
using a halogen capsule instead of a filament to produce light. An electrical current is run through the halogen gas, creating a chemical reaction that produces the light.
Fresnel
lighting instrument with a lensbetween 4 and 6 inches with a 'stepped' appearance instead of the 'full' or 'smooth' appearance of other lenses
