Area

The number of square units that cover a surface with no overlap.

Array

An arrangement of objects, pictures, or numbers in columns and rows.

Changing the grouping of addends does not change their sum. It is also called the Grouping Property of Addition. Example: For all numbers a, b and c, a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c

Associative Property of Multiplication

Changing the grouping of factors does not change their product. It is also called the Grouping Property of Multiplication. Example: For all numbers a, b and c, a x (b x c) = (a x b) x c.

Average

The number found by dividing the sum of a group of numbers by the number of addends. Also known as the mean.

Bar graph

A graph in which information is shown by means of rectangular bars.

Circle

A closed figure in which every point is the same distance from a given point called the center of the circle.

Circle graph

A graph used for data that are parts of a whole.

Commutative Property of Addition

Changing the order of addends does not change their sum. It is also called the Order Property of Addition. Example: For all numbers a and b, a +b = b + a.

Commutative Property of Multiplication

Changing the order of factors does not change their product. It is also called the Order Property of Multiplication. Example: For all numbers a and b, a x b = b x a.

Compensation

Adding one amount to an addend and subtracting an equal amount from another addend to add mentally.

Composite number

A whole number that has more than two factors.

Cone

A solid that has a circular base and a surface from a boundary of the base to the vertex.

Coordinates

An ordered pair of numbers that locates a point in the coordinate plane with reference to the x-axis and y-axis.

Cube

A solid figure that has six square faces of equal size.

Cylinder

A solid with two circular faces that are congruent and a cylindrical surface connecting the two faces.

Data

A set of numbers or pieces of information.

Decimal

A number with one or more digits to the right of a decimal point.

Decimal equivalent

A decimal that is equal to a whole number, a fraction, or another decimal.

Decimal point
