All is fair in love and war...

Up until the point of Mercutio's murder. The final events of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare were vastly influenced by Mercutio's death as the actions Romeo took to avenge his friend were taken while Romeo was blinded by rage. The first act of vengeance was the murder of Tybalt which in turn led to Romeo's banishment and therefore his own and Juliets demise. With a domino affect as such, it's obvious how the incident that is Mercutios murder changed the events later in the text quite drastically.

Paragraph 2

Up until the death of Mercutio, Romeo is calm and logical in his actions. Even during the fight leading up to Mercutio's death, Romeo had kept level headed attempting to settle Mercutio and Tybalt by saying "The Prince hath expressly forbid this bandying in Verona streets." This shows Romeo is aware of the possible consequences their fighting could cause and logically tries to console them. The change from this Romeo to the one who commits murder in the name of his friend shows Romeo's undying loyalty to the point he cannot see the consequences of his actions.

Paragraph 3

Not only does this incident change the event in the play but also helps the reader to develop and enhanced understanding on the type of person Romeo is. Shakespeare uses quotes such as "Either thou or I or both must go with him!" to show the reader how truely affected Romeo is by his friend's death and how far he is willing to go to avenge him. Romeo kills Tybalt because he it's unable to see the consequences behind this act of vengeance. With this said, not only does the reader see a different side to Romeo but also the first event influenced by Mercutio's murder.

Paragraph 4

The second event is Romeo's banishment to Mantua. With Tybalt's death comes the drastic yet fair consequences of Romeo's actions. No longer in the heat of the moment, Romeo is forced to face the reality of what happened with nothing to soften the blow. He expresses his feelings for the decided punishment in the quote "Oh banishment? Be merciful, say death. For exile hath more terror in his book." He realises too late that Mercutio's death would pave this pathway for him and although he does not know it yet, will lead him to his and Juliet's demise.

The second event is...

Paragraph 5

The final event of the play and the final event influenced by Mercutio's death is the death of Romeo and Juliet themselves. The star stuck lovers were too loyal and dependent on each other and their new found love to live without it. Romeo, believing his wife was dead committed a final act of murder to Paris once again showing the reader how blind Romeo becomes when he is overwhelmed by emotion. In his emotional state, Romeo drinks a poison so he can lie dead with Juliet which when she wakes up leads Juliet to to herself. She wishes to kiss him in the hope the poison continues to "linger on his lips" but she hears a noise and is forced to rush her death by stabbing herself. These final deaths were caused by a misunderstanding that couldn't be correctly communicated as Romeo had been exiled as punishment for killing Tybalt for killing Mercutio, the base incident in which these later events were influenced. However indirect Romeo and Juliet's deaths are related to Mercutio's death, there is a definite link between the two events.
