Polypropylene

Non-absorbable, synthetic, monofilament (can use in infected nd contaminated wounds).

Indicated for soft tissue surgery and ligation, including cardiovascular, ophthalmic and neurological procedures.

Minimal inflammatory reaction in tissue, gradually encapsulated by fibrous CT. No degradation or weaking due to action of tissue enzymes.

Prolene (Ethicon)

Poliglecaprone 25

Absorbable, synthetic, monofilament.

Should not be used in fascia as absorbable.

Undergoes hydrolysis - progressive loss of tensile strength and eventual absorption. First loose strength and then mass.

Absorption complete by 90-120 days, tensile strength is 60-70% aften 1 week and 30% after 2 weeks.

General soft tissue surgery and ligation, but not opthalmic/cardiovascular/neurological/microsurgery.

Monocryl (Ethicon)

Monocryl Plus (Ethicon) have an antibacterial coating, good for subcuticular skin closure.

Polyglactin 910

Absorbable synthetic multfilament, could be coated to resemble a monofilament.

Vicryl (Ethicon) - fully absorbed in 50-70 days, 75% tensile strength in 2 weeks, 25% in 4 weeks. Can be used for ligating/general soft surgery.

Vicryl rapide (Ethicon) - fully absorbed in 40 days, 50% strength lost in 5 days, 0% strength left after 10 days! Only indicated for approximation of tissue in skin and mucous membranes.

Polydioxanone

Absorbable synthetic monofilament but extended wound support, still 60% tensile strength in 6 weeks, absorbed in appr 200 days. Can be used to close fascia.

PDS (Ethicon)

Nylon

Monofilament, synthetic, non-absorbable. Elicits a minimal acute inflammatory response. Does gradually lose tensile strength so should not be used where permanent tensile strength is required.

Ethilon (Ethicon)

Silk

Braided, natural, sterile, non absorbable but does lose tensile strength over time. Should not be used where permanent tension is required. Elicits acute inflammatory response in tissue.

Polyester

Non-absorbable, synthetic, multifilament but coated to improve handling. Minimal inflammatory response in tissue, no decline in tensile strength over time.
