Regions of the Head
Include the frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal, orbital, nasal, infraorbital, zygomatic, buccal, oral, and mental regions.
Frontal Region
Includes the forehead and the area superior to the eyes.
Supraorbital ridge
Inferior to each eyebrow.
AKA superciliary ridge.
Glabella
Smooth elevated area between the eyebrows.
Frontal Eminence
Prominence of the forehead
Parietal Region
Region of the head that overlies the parietal bone and is covered by the scalp.
Occipital Region
Region of the head overlying the occipital bone and is covered by the scalp.
Temporal Region
Region of the head overlying the temporal bone, with the external ear being the prominent feature.
Auricle
Oval flap of the external ear
External Acoustic Meatus
Canal leading to the tympanic cavity.

Tube through which sound waves are transmitted to the middle ear within the skull.
Helix
The superior and posterior free margin of the auricle.

Ends inferiorly at the lobule.
Tragus
Portion of the auricle anterior to the external acoustic meatus and is a smaller flap of tissue.
Antitragus
Flap of tissue on the auricle which is opposite of the tragus.
Intertragic Notch
Deep notch between the tragus and the antitragus on the auricle (External Ear)
Orbital Region
Region of the head with the eyeball and all its supporting structures.
Orbit
Bony socket which contains all the supporting structures of the eye.
Sclera
The whites of the eyeball.
Iris
Central area of coloration on the eyeball.
Pupil
Opening in the center of the iris.
Eyelids
Upper and Lower
Movable
Covers and protects the eyeball.
Lacrimal Gland
behind each upper eyelid and within the orbit. Produces lacrimal fluid or tears.
Conjunctiva
Delicate and thin membrane lining the inside of the eyelids and the front of the eyeball.
Lateral Canthus
The outer corner where the upper and lower eyelids meet.
Medial Canthus
The inner angle of the eye.
Nasal Region
Region of the head where the main feature is the external nose.
Root of the nose
Located between the eyes.
Nasion
Midline junction between the nasal and frontal bones.
Inferior to the glabella.
Bridge of the nose
Formed by the bony structure inferior to the nasion.
Apex of the nose
tip of nasal region that is flexible and fromed from cartilage.
Naris
Located on each side of the nose inferior to the apex of the nose and creates a nostril.
Nasal Septum
Midline section that separated the nares.
Ala
Winglike cartilaginous structure which bounds the nares laterally.
Infraorbital region
Region of the head located inferior to the orbital region and lateral to the nasal region.
Zygomatic region
Region of the head lateral to the infraorbital region and inferior to the orbital region.
Tempormandibular joint.
Inferior to the zygomatic arch and anterior to the ear

Upper skull forms a joint with the lower jaw.
Buccal region
Region of the head that is composed of soft tissues on the cheek.
Cheek
Forms the side of the face and is a broad area of the face among the nose, mouth, and ears.
Masseter Muscle
Strong muscle which forms most of the upper cheek.
