Plessy v. Ferguson
1896-Challenged Louisiana's law requiring "equal but seperate accommodations" on rail cars by arguing that it violated the 14 th amendment-Supreme court ruled that it the constitution banned political not social inequality.
Brown v. Board of Education
1954-Most famous case of 20th century. Propelled integration of public schools and rejected seperate but equal standards. Ruling was meant to end segration.
Dred Scott v. Sanford
1857-Dred Scott was taken to a free state (Illinois) and claimed that because he touched free soil he was free. Supreme court ruled that slaves weren't protected under the constitution and they were to be considered property and returned.
