How do metabolic pathways occur?
In small, compartmentalized steps catalyzed by a specific enzyme.
What happens when glucose is metabolized?
Energy is released as heat and light. In cells it is captured as ATP.
What is oxidation?
The loss of electrons. The atom that loses electrons is oxidized.
What is reduction?
The gain of electrons. The atom that loses electrons is reduced.
Redox reactions
Transfer large amounts of energy.
What is the coenzyme NAD?
A key electron carrier existing in two forms. Oxidized=NAD+ and Reduced=NADH + H+.
What happens when glycolysis occurs without O2.
What happens when glycolysis occurs with 02?
Cellular respiration.
What are the parts of cellular respiration?
Pyruvate oxidation, the citric acid cycle, and the respiratory chain.
What occurs in pyruvate oxidation and the citric acid cycle?
CO2 is produced as are H atoms carried by NADH and FADH2.
What occurs in the respiratory chain?
The hydrogens from the citric acid and pyruvate cylces are comined with 02 which releases enough energy to create ATP.
Where does glycolysis occur in eukaryotes?
In the cytoplasm outside of the mitochondria. Cellular resipiration occurs in the mitochondria.
Where does glycolysis occur in prokaryotes?
Glycolysis, fermentation, and the citric acid cylce occur in the cytoplasm. Pyruvate oxidation and the respiratory chain operate in association with the plasma membrane.
What is glycolysis?
A pathway of ten enzyme-catlayzed reactions in the cytoplasm. It provides the starting materials for cellular respiration and fermentation.
