If a client presents warning signs of suicide, the social worker legally and ethically must
do everything reasonabley possible to assess and prevent the suicide. this may include counseling, contacting the police and arranging for involuntary hospitalization
If a social worker suspects that a client is suicidal, they shoudl ask the client directly whether or not
there are thoughts of suicide
No-suicide contract
written agreement between the social worker and the client, where the client agrees to take certain actions if suicide is being contemplated. these actions may include calling a suicide hotline, contacting the social worker and/or making an appointment to see her/his social worker or other mental health professional
If a client has attemtped suicide...
the social worker should immdediately refer for a medical examination
