What was the Sino-Japanese War and how did it relate to US economic interests?

The Sino-Japanese War happened in 1865. China was defeated. Afterwards China was split by Russia, Japan and the British into the "Spheres of influence" That worried America because they were afraid that they wouldn't be able to trade goods in the Chinese markets. They wrote the first open letter asking foreign powers to respect Chinese trade and borders.

Globalization is the tendency of businesses, technologies, or philosophies to spread throughout the world or the process of making this happen


What were the major tenets of the progressive movement?

The Progressive Movement was the idea of returning the power of the government back to the people. And out of the hands of trust. They looked back at all negative occurrences that the corporations and trusts and tried to limit their power. The three main part of this movement were labor rights, political reform, and conservation of natural resources.


How and why was McKinley Assassinated?

How: At the Pan-American conference in Buffalo New York, William McKinley was assassinated. Leon Czolgosz was his assassin when Leon reached the front of the line on 9/6/1901 he shot McKinley twice in the stomach. Gangrene began growing on the walls of his stomach which poisoned his blood. And on September 14, at 2:15 in the morning McKinley died.




Why: Leon Czolgosz had lost his job and turned to anarchism, a political philosophy adhered to by recent killers of foreign leaders.Regarding McKinley as a symbol of oppression, Czolgosz was convinced that it was his duty as an anarchist to kill him.

Why was Teddy Roosevelt able to become president if he was hated by his own party?

Teddy Roosevelt would've never become President if McKinley wasn't killed. The reason why his party hated him so much was because Roosevelt did what was best for the county not for the party. He couldn't be bought.

What was big stick diplomacy?

Teddy Roosevelt was known for the Big Stick Diplomacy. Roosevelt wanted to build a canal through Panama because Panama was a strip of land in between the trading course. The Panama Canal would influence trade from Europe and Asia.

Why did Roosevelt involve himself with Colombia?

He was looking for rebels. He promoted and armed these rebels. Then they overtook Panamaian Capital. Then the U.S. sent battleships to keep the Colombia Navy at bay. Later Panama signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla which gave furre land of the Panama Canal to America.

What was the Roosevelt Corollary?

This was that the U.S. helped stop European Colonial practices in the western Hemisphere. Roosevelt created his own corollary. To sent it over to Europe because Europe wanted to created debts but the U.S were the only ones that could collect debts. He sent them over saying “Only the U.S. can have power overtrading in the western hemisphere. But later the corollary ended.

They were important because they strived to get rid of Monopolies. Or get rid the power of large corporations which began at a state level. What they did was the biggest movements were to take the legislative power out of secrecy

Their ideas were to regulate big business, helping organized labor, protecting consumers, and conserving the nation’s already dwindling natural resources. I think this solved the worrying about the world running out of resources. It gave them labor rights.

Because he was able to complete everything on the new freedom agenda. Like passing more Anti-Trust legislation, lower the tariff and reform the banking system.

Because Wilson dropped the tariff from 40% to 25% so the government had to choose a different way to get revenue. So they passed the 16th Amendment which let the government charge income tax.

The Federal reserve created a decentralized bank for banks. It's run by the Federal Reserve Board and has helped us get through two wars. The Great Depression and several recessions
