What are Back Draft warning signs?
- Heavy dark smoke present due to abundance of unburned carbon particles.
- Smoke that appears very turbulent and boiling (pressurized).
-color will change to a gray yellow when the back draft is imminent.
-Windows and doors will probably be hot to the touch.
-Little to no visible flame.
-Any flame that is visible will have a pale yellow color.
How can you prevent Back Draft?
Prompt and proper ventilation @ the highest practical point above the fire.
Ventilation must be accomplished before entry is made into the confined area.
After ventilation apply narrow 30 degree fog to fire area.
What is an Incipient Fire?
The initial or beginning stage of a fire which can be controlled by portable fire extinguishers, Class II standpipe, or small hose system without the need for protective clothing or SCBA.
What is an IDLH environment?
(Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health)
An atmosphere that poses an immediate threat to life, would cause irreversible adverse health effects, or would impair an individuals ability to escape from a dangerous atmosphere. Any structural fire beyond the incipient stage is considered to be an IDLH atmosphere by OSHA
Entry Team (Two - In)
A team of two or more firefighters who enter an IDLH environment to conduct firefighting operations.

Rescue
Exposure Protection
Confinement
Extinguishment
Overhaul

Search
Ventilation
Salvage
Working Structure Fire?
Any structure fire that is beyond the incipient stage and requires the use of a 1 3/4" or larger attack hose line, and all the "Initial Response" companies will be committed to the incident.
Two out may be suspended when _?
If based on dispatch reports, scene reports and/or size up indicators,an imminent life-threatening situation exists where immediate rescue activities may prevent the loss of life or serious injury.
Whenever IC sends an Entry team into an IDLH atmosphere without a two out team or RIC, the IC shall __?
notify the communications center prior to entry. The Communications Center repeat the transmission so that all responding companies are aware of the situation.
When shall Two In Two out be established?
If based on dispatch reports, scene reports, and/or size up indicators NO IMMINENT.
For fires confined to appliances and/or electrical units, which would not normally allow fire to spread, ___ is dispatched. EX: include fires in the interior of ovens, dishwashers, laundry equipment, motors, electrical boxes.
1st due engine.
For fires in structure where there is a possibility of spread before arrival of fire apparatus and/or where additional personnel may be needed for ventilation, salvage, and overhaul, a __ shall be dispatched.
full structure assignment.
For unknown fire in structures where insufficient information is obtained prior to dispatch, __ shall be dispatched. Ex: 911 hang ups, 911 calls from children, 911 calls with unresolved language barriers.

1st due unit.
Two out Team duties.
At least one member of the two team shall be responsible for maintaining a constant awareness of the Entry Team operating in an IDLH atmosphere, their location, function, and time of entry.

One member of the Two Out Team is permitted to function in other roles, such as Safety Officer, Equipment Operator or incident Commander. However, the assigned task must be such nature that it can be abandoned without placing any other firefighter at additional risk if rescue or other assistance is needed.
Two Out Team should wear.

- Allow the incident commander to assign resources in an orderly manner as needed
-Ensure establishment of an appropriate water supply.
-Optimize apparatus positioning
-Provide for vicinity response when needed.
Level 1 staging?
1. shall be optional for 1st alarm company
2. Shall be implemented by 1st officer when necessary to accomplish the objectives listed above.
3. Designated apparatus shall be positioned 1 block from the incident scene in the direction of travel or at the closest hydrant (as appropriate) to the incident scene in the direction of travel.
4. Typically no staging area is established and no staging area manager is assigned.
Level II staging?
1. Shall be mandatory for greater alarm incidents unless IC or OPS section chief has directed all greater alarm units to respond directly to the scene.
2. IC, OPs, or the 1st unassigned resource arriving on the greater alarm shall establish and designate a staging area location.
3. Apparatus arriving on greater alarm shall respond directly to staging area, unless directed otherwise.
When attacking a garage fire, you __.
Attack low through pedestrian door or side window using as much wall shielding as possible. Do not attack fire head on through the garage door.
Staging Area Manager (STAM)
1st unassigned resource arriving at or establishing a staging Area shall be STAM.

If the sole remaining resource leaves the staging area and there is no one to assume STAM duties, that resource shall inform IC or OPs that there are currently no resources @ staging.

Next arriving unit assumes STAM duties.

Procedures for fires in sprinklered buildings?
The primary objective of fire fighting OPs in sprinklered buildings is to support the sprinkler system.

The general plan of OPs is for the 1st due engine to investigate the fire, the 2nd due engine to support the sprinkler and truck to do routine truck job.

What are the causes of back draft?
Oxygen deprived, super heated and pressurized fire gases.
- Fire in a closed room reduces O2 levels
- when levels drop to 15% the fire changes from flame to smolder.
-incomplete combustion is a result of the low o2 level and smolder.
-Large amounts of smoke and CO is generated.
-Should the o2 supply be increased suddenly the smoke, CO and other combustibles in the room will ignite with seemingly explosive rapidity.

4. Do not allow people to obtain or remove their own belongings. Unnecessary exposure to hazardous situations can result in injury.
5. Personnel belongings are to be brought to owners requesting them, only after permission is obtained from the Incident Commander or Fire Investigator.

Position taken by companies whose apparatus is directly involved in fire operations.
What is a potential drawback of positive pressure ventilation?
Good possibility of pushing smoke and fire into uninvolved areas of the building, extending fire that could endanger rescuers and occupants.

It also can introduce oxygen into a flammable atmosphere which may cause the fire to extend and abruptly increase in intensity and involvement.
When is commercial salvage assistance available?
