Blocking
|
When a switch is in the blocking state, it does not forward frames, it accepts BPDUs. It also does not store MAC addresses.

Listening
|
The switch still does not forward frames when listening. No new entries are made to the MAC address table; however, old, incorrect entries are timed out (this is particularly necessary when topology changes have occurred. It actively listens for other BPDUs.

Learning
|
Frames are not yet forwarded, but the switch begins to learn the MAC addresses of frames received on the interface.

Forwarding
|
Frames are forwarded, and MAC address are still being learned.

Disabled
|
Disabled ports do not accept BPDUs, do not forward frames, nor do they learn MAC addys
