Storage

The computer memory is a temporary storage area. Main memory ( internal or primary storage) is another name for RAM and ROM.

ROM

ROM ( Read Only Memory ) is used to hold instructions needed to start/ boot up the computer.


It is non volatile which means it doesn't lose contents when power is turned off.


Main types:


* programmable ROM ( PROM )


* erasable programmable ROM ( EPROM )


* electronically erasable programmable ROM ( EEPROM )

RAM

RAM ( Read Only Memory) holds data, instructions and programs while the CPU is processing it when the computer is on.



Volatile- loses content when power is turned off



The main types of RAM includes :


* Static RAM ( SRAM )


* Dynamic RAM ( DRAM )

Memory Units

BH (binary digit): A binary digit is logical 0 and 1


Nibble: A group of 4 bits


Byte: A group of 8 bits that can represent a character


Word: A group of fixed number of bits processed as a unit.

1024 kb - 1 megabyte


1024 mb - 1 gigabyte


1024 gb - 1 terabyte
