Primary storage

Also called main memory or immediate access store (IMAS) is a group of chips that resides in the motherboard (main circuit board) of the computer.


Has two types: Random Access Memory (RAM) and Read Only Memory (RAM)

Secondary storage devices

Also called auxiliary or backup storage, it is used to store data and instructions when they are not being processed. It is more permanent than main memory, since data and instructions are retained when the power is turned off. It is cheaper than primary storage and is unlimited - you can have as much as you can afford

Output devices

These are pieces of equipment that are used to get information or any other response out of a computer.


If the output can be read by human beings it is said to be human readable. If the output cannot be understood my humans it is said to be machine readable

Gets info from out of a computer

Soft copy output (temporary output)

Refers to information displayed on a screen or in audio or voice from through speakers.

This kind of output disappears when the computer is switched off.

This refers to output printed onto paper
