Steven Spielberg?

By Inam

What was Steven like as a child?

Born December 18, 1946, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Steven Thrived off the energy of fear. He says, “As a kid, I liked pushing myself to the brink of terror and then pulling back”. He would often prank his sister as well.

What adversity did he go through?

Shortly after WWII As a child, Spielberg faced difficulty being an Orthodox Jew, the kids he played with looked at him differently. "It isn't something I enjoy admitting," he said, "but when I was seven, eight, nine years old, God forgive me, I was embarrassed because we were Orthodox Jews. I was embarrassed by the outward perception of my parents' Jewish practices. I was never really ashamed to be Jewish, but I was uneasy at times. My grandfather always wore a long black coat, black hat and long white beard. I was embarrassed to invite my friends over to the house, because he might be in a corner davening [praying], and I wouldn't know how to explain this to my WASP friends." Spielberg also said he suffered from acts of anti-Semitic prejudice and bullying in his early life. He later said, "In high school, I got smacked and kicked around. Two bloody noses. It was horrible."

What kind of education did he have?

He attended Arcadia High School, in Phoenix, Arizona, and then Saratoga High School just outside of San Jose, California, where he graduated. He applied to the USC Cinema School twice, but got turned down both times. He then became a student at California State University, Long Beach studying film production but later dropped out when his career as a director started. However, after he achieved massive success he, USC awarded him an honorary degree in 1994, and in 1996 he became a university trustee. In 2002, 35 years after starting college, Spielberg finished his degree through independent projects at CSULB, and was awarded a B.A. in Film Production and Electronic Arts with an option in Film/Video Production.

How did he get involved in the business?

In 1958, a Boy Scout, he had to follow the requirement for the photography merit badge. He did it by making a nine minute movie called The Last Gunfight. After hitting success Spielberg told an interviewer, "My dad's still-camera was broken, so I asked the scoutmaster if I could tell a story with my father's movie camera. He said yes, and I got an idea to do a Western. I made it and got my merit badge. That was how it all started." When he was only 13, he won a prize for his 40 minute war film he titled Escape to Nowhere, based on a battle in east Africa. in 1963, at age 16, he wrote and directed his first solo movie, a 140-minute sci-fi adventure called Firelight. The movie was budgeted at $500, was shown in his local theatre and made a 1 dollar profit.

Career path?

His career really started when he went to Universal Studios as an unpaid, seven day per week intern in the editing department. There Spielberg made his first short film for theatrical release, the 26 minute Amblin' (1968). Later he used the same title of for the name of his production company, Amblin Entertainment. After Sidney Sheinberg (the vice-president of production for Universal's TV arm) saw the movie, and immediately saw the potential in him. Offering him a TV directing deal, making him the youngest director ever to be signed for a long term deal with a major Hollywood studio. There he directed episodes of shows like Night Gallery, Marcus Welby, LA. 2017, and Columbo.

Career Path cont'd?

Universal was impressed with his work and signed him for 4 TV films. He did a great job with those so Universal offered him to direct Jaws. The movie was almost shut down due to delays and budget over runs, but he was determined to get it done. It was a hit, winning 3 Oscars and profits were over 470 million dollars! Jaws was his big break, it made him a millionaire and gave him autonomy with his future films.

Career Path cont'd?

He then turned down offers to direct Jaws 2, King Kong, and Superman. And decided to direct Close encounters of the third kind next. It was moderately successful and made 92.4 million dollars. Then he worked on Indiana Jones with George Lucas. After which he directed many films like ET, Poltergeist, The Twilight Zone, to name a few.

What is his current job position?

Steven Spielberg is a film director, screenwriter and producer. He is perceived as being a pioneers of Hollywood movie making and is considered one of the best and most influential directors in the world. He has directed films for a living for over 40 years. He is also one of the co-founders of Dream Works Studios. He makes movies for a living.

How he effected me?

"The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves."

-Steven Spielberg

This quote has affected me as an actor because I know how difficult it is when making a movie to want your friends to play the character as you invision them to be. This quote has taught me that everyone perceives characters differently and as a film maker, you have to let the person make the character, and not let the character you have in mind make them.

Most significant part of his career?

Spielberg has accomplished many amazing things, making it difficult to pick one as the most significant. I would say that his Academy Award for best picture, awarded for Schindler's list is the most significant part of his career as it is deeply rooted in his heart and is his only Oscar for best picture. It also takes place during WWII and looks at the holocaust, which makes it personal for him as he struggled being Jewish as a child.
