-May remain dormant for years without becoming an active infection
-Women- frothy green/ yellow discharge, painful intercourse, dysuria, vulvar itching/burning
-Men- often asymptomatic
-Both may develop Petichiae lesions

Syphilis
-Caused by a spirochete,Treponea pallidum
-Can be passed from mother to child after 16th week of pregnancy
-Incubation period-10-90 days
-4 stages of disease
Syphilis- Latent Period
-If not treated, enters latent phase
-No symptoms present
-No longer contagious
-This phase can last up to 20 years
Tertiary Syphilis
-Bacteria enters and damages multiple areas of the body
-Results in:
-blindness
-CNS disease- encephalitis
-Heart disease
-Death
Treatment Syphilis
-PCN
-If allergic to PCN- EES
-People with suspicious rash should be tested for syphilis-VDRL (venereal disease research lab)
-If under TX for another VD, should be tested for syphilis

-Vaginal cultures
-Urine Cultures
-VDRL
-ELISA
-Western Blot
-Microscopic examination
Teaching STDS
-All partners should be treated once diagnosed
-Avoid sexual contact while under treatment
-Condoms are always recommended
-Finish entire course of antibiotics
-Follow up with physician
-Abstinence is the only effective way to prevent STD’S
