example of independent event
example: tossing a coin over & over. The 1st outcome doesn't affect the 2nd outcome, etc.
example of dependent event
example: picking a M&M out of a bowl of M&M's & recording the color before eating it. The next outcome will be affected by the fact that you ate part of the sample!

The odds of rolling a 6 on a die
1/6 or about 16.7%
The odds of rolling an even # on a die
1/2 or 50%

half of the numbers are even(2,4,6) so 3/6 = 1/2 or 50%
The odds of tossing a head on a coin & rolling a 2 on a die
1/2 times 1/6 or 1/12
Take the 1st event & multiply it by the 2nd event

How many combinations will there be for 2 people to sit in 2 chairs?
2 x 1 or 2 combinations

Take the original number. Put it in the 1st chair, take that person out, so the 2nd number is 1 less, multiply the 2 #s together

How many combinations will there be for 3 people to sit in 3 chairs?
3 x 2 x 1 or 6 combinations
How many combinations will there be for 3 people to sit in 2 chairs?
3 X 2 or 6 combinations. There will be 1 person left standing all the time though!
