inflammatory response

initial response (1-10 days)

vascular response

initial contraction (vasoconstriction) to decrease blood flow for 5-10 min. following platelet aggregation, vessels vasodialate to increase blood flow to the area

cellular response

platelets aggregrate and fibrin is deposited to form a clot

chemical mediators of inflammation

leukocytes infiltrate the area. macrophage cells attract fibroblasts into the area

proliferative phase

second stage (3-21 days)- capillary buds and granulation tissue begin to fill the wound to support epithelial cell migration. keratinocytes, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts are active.

remodeling phase

(7 days - 2 years)- granulation and epithelial differentiation appear in the wound bed. fiber reorganization and contraction shrink and thin the scar. newly repaired scar tissue is remodeled with 15% of tensile integrity. as it matures it gets 80% of pre injury strength

factors affecting tissue repair

age

comorbidities

edema

inappropriate wound care

infection

lifestyle

medication

obesity
