• Psychological Skills Training (PST)
o The systematic and consistent practice of mental or psychological skills
Phases of PST
 Education Phase
• Meet with the athlete, explain how PST can help them become a better athlete
o Different types of psychological skills can be learned and integrated by the athlete
• Development of a needs assessment plan with the athlete
o Figure out athlete’s strengths and weaknesses
 Thrive or crumble under pressure?
 Acquisition phase
• Work w/ the athlete to develop a master plan to teach him different types of skills to use in competition
 Practice phase
• Help the athlete do 3 things before using skills in actual competition
o Over-learn their skills
o Systematically integrate certain types of psychological skills into their program
o Simulate the psychological skill during practice

PST = EAP
General advice for PST
 Communicate how they can improve, strengths and weaknesses
 Assess the athlete’s mental skills
 May need input from other people the athlete is working with
• Do NOT go behind the athlete’s back
• Mental toughness
o An athlete’s ability to focus, rebound from failure, cope with pressure, determination to persist in the face of adversity, and mental resilience
• Self-regulation
o The ability to work toward one’s goals by monitoring and managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
