How Many Spinal Nerves?

Types?

31

8 Cervical

12 Thoracic

5 Lumbar

5 Sacral

1 Coccygeal

Level the Spinal Cord Goes to?

L2

Spinal Cord Features

Conus Medullaris, Cauda Equinae.

Conus Medullaris

Cone shape at the end of the spinal cord (L2).

Cauda Equinae

"Horse's Tail". The shape made by the final exiting spinal nerves at the Conus Medullaris (L2).

Dorsal Horn

What is it? Looks like? Responsible for what function?

Grey matter (cell bodies and dendrites). Smaller butterfly wing. Sensory.

Ventral Horn

What is it? Looks like? Responsible for what function?

Grey matter (cell bodies and dendrites). Larger butterfly wing. Motor.

Lateral Horn

What is it? Responsible for what function?

Grey matter (cell bodies and dendrites). Motor.

Dorsal Root

Connects to? Features. Fibers?

Dorsal Horn. Dorsal Root Ganglia. Sensory.

Ventral Root

Connects to? Features. Fibers?

Ventral Horn. No Ganglia. Motor,

Dorsal Rami

Fibers? Innervates?

Mixed sensory and motor fibers. Skin and back muscles.

Ventral Rami

Fibers? Innervates?

Mixed sensory and motor fibers. Body wall and lungs.

Nerve Plexus

Formed by interconnecting Ventral Rami.

Cervical Plexus

Location? Comprised of?

On either side of the neck. Ventral Rami from C1-5.

Which nerve keeps the diaphragm alive? From?

Phrenic nerve. C3,4,5 of the Cervical Plexus.

Somatic Sensory Nerves

Purpose? Neuron type?

Pain, touch, pressure, proprioception. Pseudo-unipolar neuron.

Visceral Sensory Nerves

Purpose? Neuron type?

From internal organs e.g. stomach wall stretch. Multipolar neuron.

Special Sensory Nerves

Purpose? Neuron type?

Taste, hearing, vision. Bipolar neuron.

Somatic Motor Nerves

Purpose?

Voluntary control of skeletal muscle.

Visceral Motor Nerves

Type?

Autonomic. Sympathetic, Parasympathetic.

Sympathetic Nerves

(Autonomic)

Dilate airways and pupils. Increase blood pressure and heart rate. Decrease digestive and urinary functions.

Parasympathetic Nerves

(Autonomic)

Constrict airways and pupils. Decrease blood pressure and heart rate. Increase digestive and urinary functions. Increase saliva production.

ALL Peripheral Sensory Nerve Pathways

How many neurons? Synapse? Cell body location?

1 neuron from the periphery to the CNS. No synapse. Cell body in the Dorsal Root Ganglia (PNS).

Peripheral Somatic Motor Nerve Pathways

How many neurons? Synapse? Cell body location?

1 neuron from the CNS to the periphery. No synapse. Cell body in the Ventral Horn.

Peripheral Sympathetic Motor Nerve Pathways

Location? How many neurons? Synapse? Cell body location?

Thoracic and Lumbar levels of the Spinal Cord (T1 - L2) = Thoracolumbar division. 2 neurons from the CNS to the periphery. Synapse at the Sympathetic Chain Ganglion. Preganglionic cell body in the Lateral Horn of Thoracic and Lumbar vertebrae. Postganglionic cell body in the Sympathetic Chain Ganglion.

Peripheral Parasympathetic Motor Nerve Pathways

Location? How many neurons? Synapse? Cell body location?

Brain stem or at Sacral level of Spinal Cord = Craniosacral division. 2 neurons from the CNS to the periphery. Synapse in the ganglion within or adjacent to the target organ. Preganglionic cell body in the brain stem of Sacral spinal cord. Postganglionic cell body in the ganglion within or adjacent to the organ.

Sympathetic Chain Ganglion

Vertical chain of ganglion for the synapsing of motor fibres as there is no Ventral or Lateral Root ganglion.
