What does A.I.D.S. stand for?
Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome
What is A.I.D.S caused by?
A virus called Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
adaptive immunity (what is another name for it?)
acquired immunity, means over time immune system is able to increasingly recognise specific antigen
antibiotis
chemical that kills/ injures bacteria
antibody
protein produced by B lymphocytes in response to the presence of an antigen (released in to the blood stream)
antigen
foreign substance, often a protein, that is not produced by the body. Its presents causes antibodies to be produced
antiviral drug
drug that kills or treats symtoms of a viral infection
autoimmune response
when immune system attacks its own tissue
B cells (whats another name for it)
B lymphocyte: special type of lymphocyte produces antibodies
immune response
body's response to a specific antigen
immunisation
artificial introduction of weakened antigens or pathogens to allow person the develop antibodies
infection
caused by the invasion and multiplication of pathogens
lymphocyte
a type of white blood cell that is produces in the bone marrow. they involve in immune response
lymphatic system
consists of lymph node and tubes that drain excess tissue fluid back into blood. Also protects body against invading pathogens (lymph glands store lymphacytes which fight disease)
pathogen
disease causing organism
phagocyte
type of white blood cell that engulfs particles such a bacteria and viruses
plasma cell
the B cell which produces antibodies
specific immunity
the bodys resistance to infection by pathogens that have gone past a non-specific defence
T cells (whats another name for it?)
T lymphocytes: kills antigen such as fungi and viruses
vaccine
substance that stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies to a particular antigen
What is bacteria?
microscopic, single celled prokaryote organisms
3 shapes:
- sperical
- rod
- spirochete
some are pathogens
What is a virus?
strand of nucleic acid wrapped up in a protein coat
Summaries T cells (6)
T cells:
- form bone marrow
- long lived
- move to thymus during foetal development & after birth
- mature in thymus
- cell mediated immunity
- effictive against viruses, fungi, cancer, bacteria
Summaries B cells (4)
- Form in the bone marrow
- short lived
- mature in the none marrow
- antibody (humoral) mediated immunity
- effective ahainst bacterial & viral infections
