External Ear

Composed of the auricle or pinna and the external auditory canal

Middle ear

Begins with the tympanic membrane which is relatively thin and vibrates when sound waves hit it.

Inner ear

Complex system of communicating chambers and tubes known as the labyrinth. Divided into 3 portions, semicircular canals, a vestibule, and a cochlea.

Cerumen

A wax like substance commonly known as earwax, lubricates the ear and protects it by trapping dirt, dust, and other microbes.

Tympanic membrane

Fibrous partition located at the inner end of the external auditory canal, separates the external ear from the middle ear.

Ossicles

3 tiny bones: malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup)

Oval window

Ends the middle ear and marks the beginning of the inner ear.

Eustachian tube

Helps maintain equal pressure on both sides of the eardrum, connects middle ear to the throat.
