What are the two category systems of emotion?

What do they focus on?
- One system categorizes emotion along two dimensions at once: valence and activity
- this system allows us to see how specific emotions cluster together depending whether they are active-negative, active-positive, or passive-positive

Another system is based on its intensity
- points to the impact of labeling an emotion with a particularly intense name

- These systems focus on attributes of emotion, such as valence (whether it reflects a positive or negative feeling), activity (whether it implies action or passivity), or intensity (how strongly you felt it is)
What is Dualism?
way of thinking that constructs polar opposite categories to encompass the totality of a thing, prompting us to think about it in an “either/or” fashion
- Ex: Think of all temperature as either hot or cold, or all of gender as either feminine or masculine
What is the Biological Theory of Emotion?
- Assumes that emotion exists separately from thought and that we need thought only to bring a preexisting emotion to our conscious awareness
What is the Social Interaction Theory of Emotion?
Interested in how people interact with their social situation before, during, and after the experience of emotion
- Focuses on how the reactions of others to our gestures help us define what we are feeling
What is emotional contagion?
the process of transferring emotions from one person to another; occurs when one person’s feelings “infect” those around him or her
What is emotional experience?
refers to feeling emotion and thus is intrapersonal in nature
- Ex: Belle felt nervous before her interview
What is communicating emotionally?
suggests that emotion itself is not the content of the message but rather a property of it (Ex: Roberto yells at his wife telling her that she is making them late for dinner)
What is emotional communication?
actually talking about the experience of emotion to someone else
- Ex: Essie told Patrick how she was feeling about adopting a child as a single mom
What are emotional effects?
relate to how emotional experience impacts communication behavior
What are three ways emotion is communicated?
1. Nonverbal cues
2. Verbal cues
3. Combination of cues
