What is sound? |
A type of energy that you can HEAR. |
What makes sound? |
Sounds are made by something vibrating -- moving quickly back and forth. |
What can sound NOT move through? |
Empty space -- VACUUM |
What CAN sound move through? |
Sound can ONLY move through a solid, liquid, or gas. |
What does sound move through fastest? |
Fastest through a solid. |
What does sound move through slowest? |
Slowest through a gas. |
What is PITCH? |
How high or low a sound is. |
What is VOLUME? |
How loud or soft a sound is. |
What are SOUND WAVES? |
Crowded particles followed by widely-spaced particles. |
In what directions do sound waves move? |
Sound waves move in ALL directions. |
What are the three characteristics of sound that makes it special? |
1. Wavelength 2. Frequency 3. Amplitude |
What is WAVELENGTH? |
Distance from one area of squeezed (crowded) particles to the next. |
What is FREQUENCY? |
Number of times a sound source vibrates in one second. |
What determines PITCH? |
Frequency determines pitch -- the highness and lowness of sound. |
What is AMPLITUDE? |
The amount of energy carried by a sound wave. |
What is the difference between high and low amplitude? |
High amplitude produces LOUD sound. Low amplitude produces SOFT sound. |
What do tools for hearing do? |
Help collect sound waves from the source of the sound and channel them to our ears. |
Name two tools that help make sound loud enough to hear. |
Stethoscope and hearing aids |
Name the parts of the ear. |
1. Outer ear 2. Ear drum 3. Middle ear 4. Inner ear 5. Auditory nerve to the brain |
What does the outer ear do? |
Collects sound waves from the air |
What does the ear drum do? |
Vibrates as sound waves hit it |
What is the middle ear? |
Three small bones that vibrate |
What does the inner ear do? |
Sound waves travel along a tube (cochlea) filled with liquid |
