Solar system |
The sun the planets their moons and dwarf planets |
What is sun |
Sun is a huge ball of fire which gives us heat and light and it lies in the center of solar system |
What is a dwarf planet
Dwarf planet is smaller in size and is not strong enough to sweep its orbit of heavenly objects like other planets |
What are features of a planet |
They are round objects They revolve around the sun They should be strong to sweep their orbit or clear its orbit from other heavenly objects |
Blue planet |
Earth is called blue planet because more than 70% of earth surface is covered with water and when it is observed from outer space it appears blue. Hence called blue planet |
Red planet |
Mars is called red planet because its surface and rocks are red in color |
Mercury |
Smallest planet and closest Does not have atmosphere or satellite |
Venus hottest planet |
Venus is 2nd in solar system Hottest planet even though mercury is closest because mercury being very close to sun does not have atmosphere Venus has atmosphere which has more of carbon dioxide and so it absorbs more heat making it the hottest planet in the solar system |
Name the planet in the solar system which is similar to eath and how is it similar |
Mars is the planet which is similar to earth because scientists believe that it is the only planet besides earth where life exists |
Name the largest and fastest planet of solar system |
Jupiter is the largest and fastest spinning planet of solar system |
Name the planet which has striped appearance and why |
Jupiter has striped appearance because Jupiter spins very fast pulling the clouds surrounding it to form stripped pattern |
One fine morning you have landed on a planet whose surface is covered with red soil and rocks where are you |
Mars |
Name the planets which are outer planets |
Jupiter saturn uranus and neptune are outer planets because they lie outside the asteroid belt. These are also known as gas gaints because they are made up of gases |
Name the planets which are inner planets |
Mercury venus earth and mars are inner planets because they are inside the asteroid belt these are also known as terrestrial planets |
The dwarfplanet which is beyond pluto is |
Xena |
Orbit |
The fixed path along which the planets and dwarf planets move around the sun iscalled orbit |
Satellite |
The object which revolve around the planet in a fixed orbit is called satellite they are of two kinds natural and artificial Natural are not man made eg moon Artificial satellites are man made they are used mainly for weather forecasting and communication |
Name the planets which donot have satellites |
Mercury and venus |
How many satellites does earth have name them |
Earth has only one satellite and it is called moon |
What type of climate does moon have |
Moon has an extreme climate because it does not have an atmosphere to protect it from extreme heat or cold. The temperatures can be as high as 100degrees at noon and as low as -173 at night |
Why does earth has life
Earth has life on it because It has oxygen It has water It is covered by a layer of atmosphere which protects us from harmful ultraviolet rays The atmosphere protects the earth from extreme cold and heat |
Why there is no life on moon |
There is no life on moon because There is no water There is no oxygen There is no atmosphere to protect it from ultra violet rays Absence of atmosphere makes the temperatures extreme like 100 degrees during daytime and -173 degrees at night |
How does moon shine when it does not have its own light |
Moon shines even though it does not have its own light because it reflects the sunlight that falls on its surface |
What are stars |
The shining and twinkling objects which appear in the night sky are called stars.they are huge balls of gases that spread out heat and light |
Why do stars appear like tiny pinpoints of lights even though they are huge |
Stars are very huge but since they are very far away they look like tiny pinpoints of light to us |
Constellations |
A group of stars that seem to form specific pattern are called constellations eg ursa major the great bear scorpio scorpion and orion the Hunter |
Who am I? I am the hunter. Seen only in the night skies. |
Orion is a constellation |
Axis |
Axis is an imaginary line on which the earth rotates . It runs through the centre of the earth from the northpole to the south pole tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees |
What causes day and night |
The rotation of the earth on its axis causes day and night |
How much time does earth take to complete one rotation |
It takes 24 hrs to complete 1 rotation |
What is revolution |
The movement of earth around the sun along the fixed orbit is called revolution. It takes 365 1/4 day to complete one revolution |
Equator |
An imaginary line around the earth which divides the earth into two equal halves the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere |
How are days and nights caused |
When the earth rotates on its tilted axis one half of the earth faces the sun and other half is away from the sun.thecountries which are on that side of the earth which face sun have day and the other halfcountries which are away from sun have night |
What are galaxies to which galaxy our solar system belong |
A group of constellations is called galaxy. Solar system belongs to milky way |
Name the star which is closest to sun |
Alpha centauri is the closest star to our sun |
When it is night in America it is day in India why |
Rotation of earth on its axis causes day and night .one half of the earth which faces the sunhas day and on this side lies india. The other half which is away from sun has night and on this side lies america. So when America has night india has day. |
Astronomers |
An astronomer is a person who studies about stars planets and other heavenly bodies |
Why do we see sun rising in the east and setting in the west |
The earth rotates from west to east so we see the sun rising in the east and setting in the west |
How many days moon take to complete one revolution around earth |
Moon takes 27 days to complete one revolution |
What happens if the earth stops rotating |
Earth rotation on its axis causes day and night. If the earth stops rotating thenday and night are not caused and the half of earth which faces the sun will continuously have day and the other half which is away from sun will continuously have night |
Why cant we see stars and moon during day time |
We can't see stars or moon during day time because sun being the nearest star is very bright when compared other stars |
What causes seasons |
The revolution of earth around the sun and the earth tilt on its axis causes seasons |
How are seasons caused explain |
When earth revolves around the sun on its tilted axis sun rays fall more directly on either of the hemisphere I.e northern or southern hemisphere due to its position . The hemisphere say southern hemisphere on which rays fall more directly have summer and the northernhemisphere will have winter. After 6 months when position changes southern hemisphere will have winter and northern will have winter. |
Why is it summer in India when it is winter in Australia |
India and snd Australia are on different hemispheres india in northern hemisphere and Australia on southern hemisphere. Because of earth tilt on its axis and revolution different hemispheres will have different seasons at a time |
The dwarf planet lies beyond pluto |
Xena |
The second last planet of the solar system |
Uranus |
An imaginary line around the earth that divides it into northern and southern hemisphere is |
Equator |
