Parent Material

The C Horizon. This is the third layer of soil. It is the lightest color (gray). There are no nutrients, animals or plant growth. It contains weathered rock and sediment.

The A Horizon. It is the first layer of soil and the darkest layer of soil. It contains humus, plant roots, small animals, water and nutrients for plant growth.

|
The decayed organic matter in soil.

Particle Size
|
Gravel is the biggest, then sand, then silt, then clay.

Sand
|
Largest particle size of soil. It is gritty and does not hold water wall- water moves through quickly

Silt
|
Smaller particle size of soil than sand but bigger than clay. It is smooth and silk when wet and forms clumps when dry. It holds more water than sand.

Clay
|
Smallest particle size of soil. Sticky when wet and forms hard clumps when dry. It absorbs that most water-water moves through very slowly.

Bedrock
|
The R Horizon. This is below the last layer of soil. It is solid rock and has not yet been weathered or broken down.

Soil Horizon
|
A soil layer with physical and chemical properties that differ from those of soil layers above or below it.
