Symbols- Anything that shares a particular meaning recognized by people who share the culture
Language- a system of symbols that allows members of a society to communicate with one another

Values and Beliefs- *Values- socialized to being good *beliefs- socialized to being true
Norms- rules and expectations by which a society guides the behaviors of its members

Mores and Folkways- *Mores- society's standards of proper moral conduct *Folkways- a society's custom for routine, casual interaction
Social Control- reinforced through sanctions (remember social facts?)

ideal- social patterns mandated by cultural values and norms. In other words; what a culture imagines it's society to be like, or value.
real- actual social patterns that only approximate cultural experience
i.e: According to Chris Hedges we can infer that- American's ideal culture is democracy but our real culture is imperialism

High Culture- refers to cultural patterns that distinguish a society's elite
Popular Culture- cultural pattern widespread among a society's people. i.e. : protestant work ethic, exists as an American value from rich to poor
