What is Sociology ?

The scientific study of social behavior and human groups.

What is sociological imagination ?

An awareness between an individual and the wider society both today and in the past.

What is science?

The body of knowledge obtained by methods based on systematic observation.

Who was Emile Durkheim?

Functionalist thinker: Did all the work on suicide



Studied a tribe of people and found that religion reinforces a group's solidarity



"Anomie" : "loss of direction" meaning that as jobs became more specialized than people would grow further apart and start feeling lonely which could contribute to suicide



But then found mechanical solidarity: everyone needs each other because it is so specialized

Who was Max Weber ?

Taught his students how to use "verstehen"



Came up with the "Protestant Ethic" = to acheive success all hard work and no play



Figured this ethic was were the capitalist mentality came from

"Sympathetic understanding": In order to understand people's behavior, understand the reasons/emotions behind their actions
