Family - Murdock 1949
A social group characterised by common residence, economic co-operation and reproduction. It involves adults of both sexes, at least two of whom maintain a socially approved sexual relationship, and one or more children, own or adopted, of the sexually cohabiting adults.
Monogamy
One husband married to one wife. E.g. most industrial societies.
Polygyny
One husband married to more than one wife. E.g. some pacific islandd and muslim societies.
Polyandry
One wife married to more than one husband. E.g. parts of Borneo.
Household
Consists of a person living alone, or two or more people who share the same residence and housekeeping.
Kinship
Relationships based on biological or marital ties.
Conjugal Roles
The roles played by a male and female partner in marriage or in a cohabiting relationship. There are two types of conjugal roles:
Segregated roles
Where husbands and wives don't share housework, childcare, decisions and leisure time.
Joint roles
Where husbands and wives share housework, childcare, decisions and leisure time.
