Social Stratification
the layering of people according to access to societal resources. Ranking, classifying or setting hierarchy.

characteristic of society, persists over generations (child receive social class from parent), universal, inequality and the belief system that justifies inequality.
Key Societal Resources
education, stable jobs and bank loans
ideology
set of assumptions people use to understand, advocate how people should be treated, and how life should be. Hint: What is Ideal *wink wink*

the dominant ideaology refers to the most powerful in the society. For the U.S.- Christiainity for religion, freedom for social ideology, democracy for political, and capitalism for economic.

Ideology is socialized at a young age.
meritocracy
determination of ones own personal success, one should work hard for success. It is not given to you. Life is "equal" so those for fail did not use their "equal" opportunities.

Roughly half of all wealth is inherited. Is that true meritocracy?
Functionalist on Stratification
In order for the world to operate as it is now and how it has always, inequality must continue. There needs to be people who are working the low end jobs just as we need people working the upper class CEO and such careers. The CEOs worked hard to get where they are at so they deserve to get paid the amount they do.

Also promotes in-group solidarity, people tend to mingle with others of similar social class.
Conflict Theorist on Stratifcation
Argue that people do not need a lot of money to do good work, they do so because of pride and character.

Functionalist views people as "selfish" and money motivated.
Karl Marx
stratifcation- harmful to society, not functional. Promotes social conflict by giving others greater opportunities of success.

Capitalist brings inequality and poverty. Also wealth and success?

promotes oppression and exploitation
pomotes conflicts between social classes and this is harmful. When was the last time you really wanted to go beat up or hate on a upper class or a lower class just because?
meritocracy is not necessary. Good work should be rewarded with pride and satisfaction, not wealth and further separation.
equality asssures fairness, and with fairness society would be more harmonious.

Would doctors be doctors if they earned just as much as secretary or another loss stress occupation? Sure there are the exceptions of people who would. But we don't worry about exceptions in sociology.
Max Weber
dimensions to social stratisfaction:
1. social class, the economic dimensions that marx wrote about. Having wealth means power.
2. status- low paying occupation with high status PRIEST!
3.Power- political or bureaucratic power.
Social Mobility
Movement up or down the stratification system, caused by two forces exchange and structural.
Exchange: much like meritocracy, work hard and gets a promotion
Structural: a small town with a new factory, factory shuts down. Everyone is poor now regardless if they were the hardest working people.

Factors of structural mobility; globalization with many factories outside the U.S. and purchasing outside the U.S., downsizing because they just dont need that many workers anymore, unions are weakening, automation is taking over (iRobot shit), CEOs being scruges, tax is weighted toward the poor, service jobs are low paying, government just aint doing that much for us.
Social Inequality
our culture suggests that poverty and wealth are individual consequences rather structural conditions.

This has been drilled in our head, the poor have been corrupted to think they will be poor forever. Soooooo.... they develop a low self-esteem and have low hopes for the future decreasing their chances for success and chance to escape poverty.
Single most influencing factor of social class
Class of the Family the child is born in!
Poverty? Ya you broke. Two ways? What?
relative and absolute
relative: the deprivation of some compared with others. A Middle or even a upper middle class seems poverish to the upper class sometimes.

Absolute: deprivation of resources that are life threatening. Buy some damn toms and get the poor kids some shoes!
Who is Poor?
16% of our churen
11% of the oldies
22% of what my teachers says "colored" brothers and sisters. I just call them americans with a slight (I mean major) pigment difference between him/her and I.
Women/Men 61/39

Poverty is so high in America because we accept it, its "their" fault. I agree but not in all situations but then again sociologist don't think of exceptions.
