religion binds people together in a community and religion reflects the views of that society. he believed that society was fortified by religion. he talked about the sacred and the profane in religion. society uses totems to bind itself to the supernatural. these can be items or symbols that bring society closer to the supernatural. the profane is anything that isnt sacred and can detract or distract from the sacred. |

capitalism stems from puritanism. they would work hard to gain wealth, but not for the sake of just having wealth. they claimed that traditional authority aften stems from religion, so he and durkheim would agree that religion is beneficial to modern society. |
