Florida
When- 1819
Why- Spain was losing control of its empire in North America. The US was hacing quarrels with the Seminole Indians along the border between Georgia and Florida. Andrew Jackson pushed into Florida and overtook two Spanish forts. This showed Spain that it couldn't hold onto Florida much longer.
How- A treaty between the US and Spain was signed in 1819. In return for Florida, the US did not make Spain pay back the 5,000,000 that Spain owed them.
Louisiana Purchase
When-1803 (Thomas Jefferson was President)
Why- France needed the money to fight a war with England and they didn't think they would be able to keep the land from the U.S. for much longer
How- The U.S. purchased 850,000 square miles for 15000000 this worked out to .03 cents a mile
Texas Annexation
When- 1845
Why- Texans who had been living under Mexican rule devlared their independence from Mexico and their dictator Santa Anna in 1836. The Texans lost several battles before finally winning their independence from Mexico.
How- Texas was annexed by the United States in 1845
Oregon Country
When- 1846
Why- The Oregon County had been an area of trouble between the US Britain and Russia. They were each claiming parts of the Oregon County for themselves and this led to confusion.
How- The US agreed to a treaty with England and pushed Russia further north. Oregon was annexed by the US in 1846
Mexican Cession
When- 1848
Why- The US and Mexico were quarrelling over the borders of Texas. One of these squabbles led to the death of 11 Americans. Full scale war broke out after this and the US was eventually victorious.
How- A peace treaty was signed that stated the following
a. Mexico would accept the Rio Grande River as the Texas border and give New Mexico and California to the US.
b. US would pay Mexico 15,000,000.
Gadsden Purchase
When- 1853
Why- The US wanted to build a railroad and the easiest passage was through southern Texas and then West. The problem was that Mexico owned this land.
How- James Gadsden, a railroad agent, was sent to Mexico where he purchased the land for 10,000,000. This was a 30,000 square mile tract of land.
