What is the difference between a royal colony and a proprietary colony?

One is owned by the government, which was called the crown. A proprietary colony is owned by one or two people and they can do whatever they want with it. Examples: Proprietary colony: Pennsylvania: William Penn Royal colonies: Massachusetts was an English royal colony and Florida was a Spanish Royal Colony.

Why was the defeat of the Spanish Armado important to England's quest for colonies overseas?

They get an advantage because they have more ships and control of the ocean since they won the battle. It caused them to control the trade routes and be able to explore, colonize, and settle.

How did the Jamestown settlement survive the first two years?

They traded with Native Americans and had supplies and people sent from England. John Smith made all this happen.

Why do you think the king of England let a group of merchants try to establish a colony in North America?

He got money, land, power,trade, and he was able to expand his empite. The cash crops were indigo and tobacco. Also, lumber, that they used for their ships. King Charles gave them the charter.

Why did the English settle in North America?

Profit off gold and they could establish trade with fish and fur.

Why do you think King Charles was willing to give the Puritans a royal charter?

So he could get rid of them because they were protesting and they were a pain to him. It also got him more land.

Why are the Mayflower Compact and the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut significant in US history?

They were both a written attempt to create a respresentitave government.

Why did the pilgrims settle in Cape Cod instead of Virginia?

Winter was approaching, so they landed at the first location they sighted, which was Cape Cod, and they had gotten blown off course.

Why did the Seperatists and Puritans leave England and settle in North America?

Separatists: escape persecution but maintain their religious values and English was of life


Puritans: escape persecution and establish a new society based on their religious beliefs.

Why was New Netherland a valuable Colony to England?

It had a prosperous economy, skilled artisans, a good harbor, and thriving trade.

What stance do you think Penn's Quakers will take during the American Revolution? Why?

They won’t take part in it because they are pacifists and believe in peace. They were neutral.

Why do you think the Church of England may consider the Quakers a threat?

Because the Church of England ran England along with the king. If people stated believing on their own, becoming Quakers, they would no longer go to church and the church would lose its power.

How did the New England settlers and settlers in Pennsylvania differ in how they acquired land from the Native Americans?

Pennsylvania got land from the Native Americans buying it from them. The New England settlers moved onto it without permission or payment.

How do you think the geography of the South promoted the development of plantations?

Flat lands and fertile farming and there were plants located there like Tabaco and Indigo.

Why might a plantation owner prefer enslaved workers over prisoners and indentured servants?

Enslaved workers were a permanent workforce. Other workers could leave at the ends of their terms.

How did Maryland deal with tensions between Protestant and Catholic settlers?

They created the act of tolerance

The French were more interested in fishing and trapping than in large-scale settlement.

VA: settlers pushed west into Native America lands Carolinas: proprietary colony; split into two royal colonies; produced tobacco, timber, tar, rice, and indigo


GA: began as place for debtors and poor people and as military barrier against Spanish expansion; colony attracted poor people and religious refugees; slow growth led proprietor to return colony to the king.

A legal document that grants someone the right to own land and settle a colony there.

Joint-stock compant

a company whose stock is owned jointly by the shareholders. (Someone buys a stock and gets money if it goes up, and loses money if it goes down)

Puritan

They stayed true to the Church of England.

Seperatist

They had a different religion than Englands but they still considered themselves as English.

Proprietary colony

A colony in which one or two indivuals own it

Pacifist

A person who believes in peace and doesn't believe in war and violence.
