Jamestown

1606--1st Permanent English colony in North America (later became Virginia) Established by a Joint Stock Company (London Company) with a Headright system to encourage settlers and establish tobacco plantations.

Headright system

Initiated 1st by the London Company-- land was provided to anyone who paid their passage or the passage of others to the colony.

Tobacco Plantations in Jamestown

enlarged their plantations through the headright system and used indentured servants and later slaves (created conflict over land with Native Americans)

worked for plantation owners to pay for their passage to North America

House of Burgessses

Lawmaking body in Jamestown that brought the idea of Self Government to the colonies.

Followed the patterns of government and economies of Jamestown

New England Colonies

Settled by Separatists (Pilgrims) and Puritans needing a safe place from persecution in the 1600's (Got along with Native Americans)

Proprietor of Pennsylvania, brought Quakers, religious tolerance, and good relations with Native Americans

South Carolina

Proprietary colony granted to 8 Lord Proprietors by King Charles to pay a debt. (Charleston named in his honor)

John Locke

Wrote the Fundamental Constitution of South Carolina which called for religious tolerance to attract settlers but granted Titles to large landowners.
