Moses Austin
First person to pave the way for Anglo-American colonization of Texas. Born in Connecticut. With Barron Bastrop, he was able to get a land contract from Spain (Gov. Martinez) to settle 300 people.

Decree of April 6 1830
A law issued by the Mexican government that stopped U.S. immigration to Texas. It allowed Mexican and European families to immigrate to Texas with generous land grants and financial assistance. The law also set up new forts. It placed taxes called Custom Duties on goods made in foreign nations.
General Manuel de Mier y Terán
In charge of a Mexican government inspection party that observed large Anglo American influence in East Texas. Warned Mexican president of growing American influence in Texas. Said if Mexico did not act, Texas would be lost forever.
John Davis Bradburn
Commander of a small Mexican garrison on Galveston Bay. Got the Anglo's mad at him because he took supplies and wouldn't return runaway slaves. Fought Spain for Mexico’s independence, awarded the rank of colonel.
Conventions of 1832-33
Conventions called by Texans held to make Texas better (improve postal service, have judges, better education, better protection and to allow U.S. immigration). Resolved that Texas be made a Mexican state and that immigration from the United States be permitted again.

A type of government where duties are shared between state and the national government.
San Felipe
The place where the conventions of 1832 and 1833 took place. Sam Houston elected delegate.
Mary Holly Austin
A cousin of Stephen F. Austin who visited Texas and wrote a series of letters in which she describes everyday life in Austin’s colonies.
Fredonia
The place where a group of 15-30 armed settlers led by Benjamin Edwards revolted for independence, justice and liberty. The claimed the creation of the "Republic of Fredonia"
Turtle Bayou resolutions
The colonist adopted a number of statements (resolutions) declaring their loyalty to Mexico; they denied that they were revolting against Mexican Authority and that they were following and supporting Santa Ana’s command.
Consultation
the 1835 Texas meeting of colonists on a proposed rebellion against the Republic of Mexico. The Peace Party feared the consultation would cause trouble. The War Party favored the consultation, wanted to declare independence. Austin approved the consultation.
Empresario
A Spanish word for land agent whose job it is to bring in new settlers to an area.

Old 300
The first 300 families Steven settled in Texas. From Lousianna, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennesee and Missouri.

Settled 800 families in the Nacogdoches area. He found people already settled there and made them show him their titles (making them angry). Brother of Benjamin Edwards (who led the Fredonia Revolt)

Steven F Austin
Called the "Father of Texas." Settle over 1200 families in texas. President of the 1832 convention. Was arrested for a letter sent to the Texas settlers.

In Texas, near the Brazos river and the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico
Why did Austin locate his colony there?
He located it there for the fresh water, good farm land and fast shipments of supplies
What was the Fredonia Rebellion?
The Fredonia rebellion was a rebellion of 15-30 people led by Benjamin Edwards. They held up a flag for independence, liberty and justice. The Mexican troop caught some of them and chased out the rest
What did the U.S. think about the rebellion?
They didn’t care for the rebellion and didn’t send any requested troops.
What did the Mexicans thing of the rebellion?
It made then suspicious that the U.S. was trying to get Texas.
What did Mier y Teran report about Texas?
He reported that Anglo American influence was strong in East Texas and the Anglo settlers outnumbered the Mexican settlers by at least 5 to 1. He told Mexican government, if they didn't act, Texas would be lost forever.
What were the terms of the decree of April 6 1830?
All immigration is to be stopped, suspends most empresario contracts that haven’t been completed. It encouraged immigration by Mexican and Europeans. Set up forts and placed taxes called custom duties on goods.

The wanted their friends and relatives to come to Texas. The decree also put taxes on them.

The resolutions from 1832 were not presented to officals in Mexico. In 1883, the settlers wrote their resolutions and Steven f. Austin took them to Mexico City, so Santa Ana would see them.

He was arrested for writing a letter telling the settlers to form their own government.
What problems developed between the Mexican and Anglo Americans that would lead into fighting in the Texas Revolution?
A small war started and General Martin (Santa Anna's brother) got mad and wanted war with Texas and settlers wanted to have a consultation which caused trouble. The settlers want to have war.
What were the differences between the Anglo Americans and the Mexicans as far as language, politics, religion, and slavery is concerned?
Mexicans: Spanish, dictatorship, catholic, against slavery
Anglos: English, federalist, freedom of religion, for slavery
