What is apartheid?
Apartheid was from 1948 until 1991, the South African government's policy of complete legal separation of the races, including the banning of all social contacts between blacks and whites. The word apartheid means "separateness" in Afrikaans, one of South Africa's offical languages.
Who is Nelson Mandela?
Nelson Mandela was president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black president. Mandela was elected by the country's National Assembly. The Assembly had been chosen in South Africa's first elections in which the country's blacks were allowed to vote. THis development marked the beginning of a new era in South Africa and resulted in blacks gaining control of the government after a long period of domination by the white minority.
What is Glasnost?
GLasnost is a policy of the SOviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev which called for more openess with the nations of the West, and a relaxing of restraints on Soviet citizenry.
