Roger Williams

a minister in Salem, Massachusetts, who founded the first Baptist Church in America. He also opposed English colonists' taking of Native American lands by force. He ended up leaving the colony and settling Rhode Island.


John Winthrop

Puritan governor who believed that the Puritan community was serving as a model for the rest of the world to follow. He said: " we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us."
