What was the American frontier in the 1860's
The Great Plains because they were unsettled, occupied by N.A.'s, had little rain, and had no trees for houses and fires.
Why were the great plains considered uninhabitable
There were hostile N.A.'s, little rain, no way to bring water from the ground, no trees, bad soil, and bad weather
What factors encouraged cowboys and cattle ranchers to set out for the Great Plains
There was a ton of grass for the cattle to eat, the new railroads could ship the cattle and in the east it would sell for more money.
How did the Homestead Act of 1862 encourage settlement of the great plains.
It offered anyone 160 free acres of land if they stayed there and farmed it for 5 years. A lot of people in the country wanted free land.
What inventions made the settlement of the great plains possible.
The inventions of the steel plow to help plow the land, windmills to bring up water from the ground, barbed wire to mark land and keep things in enclosed space, screen windows to keep out bugs, a reaper to harvest the crops faster, and a thresher to separate the crops into the correct pile.
Describe the dangers and hardships of frontier life
The dangers included blizzards, hostile N.A.'s, building sod houses, digging the well for water, prairie fires, and hailstorms. These all made frontier life very hard for the settlers and some went back east.
What events closed the American Frontier
The official end of the frontier was the oklahoma land rush of 1889, after that there was no more unsettled land.
What was life like for the N.A.'s on the great plains.
life was a struggle and the settlers didn't help. The battles and tribe relocations hurt N.A. culture and tore apart their people. The settlers really made life much more difficult than it had to be for the N.A.'s
How did life on the Great
plains differ for N.A.'s and settlers
The N.A.'s followed the buffalo and when they killed them they used every part of the body. They didn't believe in killing for sport. They didn't believe that land was to be owned, just lived on. Tribes were like big families, had set jobs in the tribe, and were pushed around by settlers. The settlers were greedy and wanted all N.A. land and got it in treaties, but later they broke those very same treaties just to get more land.
What attempts did the U.S. Government make to keep peace with the N.A.'s
They passed the Dawes Act which was supposed to turn N.A.'s into farmers and give up their land so the U.S. could have it. The whites didn't really want to make peace they wanted to have the N.A. land.
Sand Creek Massacre
This massacre was in 1864 when the Colorado militia brutally murdered 150 N.A.'s. This shows how selfish and inexcusable the whites actions were.
Discovery of Gold in Black Hills
This brought many whites looking for gold to N.A. land and conflicts arose. Mines were opened on reservations
The completion of the transcontinental railroad
This caused cattle ranchers to be able to bring their livestock across the country and can feed them anywhere
The Battle of Little Bighorn
This battle in 1876 was when the U.S. army tried to attack a Cheyenne and Sioux camp but were greatly outnumbered. The army was wiped out and the N.A.'s kept their land.

Ghost Dance
The religion where if Native Americans did this dance they believed that the white settlers would go back to europe and the Native Americans could live in peace. The U.S. felt like this was an uprising and wanted to end the Ghost Dance
Dawes Act
This was made to have N.A.'s turn to white culture instead of their own. It tried to make them farmers and took children to boarding schools to learn white culture. It also tried to make N.A.'s farmers
Reservations
Where Native Americans were put to live after the U.S. moved them out of their sacred land. This shows how the U.S. tried to control the N.A.'s actions.
