Functional Theory

Are not assimilated Ex: Indians/Amish
Convergent Subculture
Tend toward Assimilation Ex: Immigrants moving into US

Culture changes through time with contact with people of different cultures
Stratification
A classification of members of society based on unequal distribution of resources

Cultural differentiation
Group members have a noticeably different culture than mainstream culture
Structural Differentiation
Group members have same socioeconomic status that differs from dominant group
Power differential theory
Relative power switch through immigration and pressure on minority to assimilate
ex: our first settlers
Internal colonialism theory
A foreign power coming into a country and a dominate group taking over. Ex: Black ghettos being controlled from the outside
Prejudice
A system of beliefs, feelings, and action orientations regarding a certain group or groups of ppl
What 4 factors create a social group?
Ethnicity/Race; social class; urban/rural; regionalism
Cognitive Level
Beliefs and perceptions of a group as threatening or nonthreatening
Emotional Level
The feelings that a minority group arouses in an individual
Action-orientation Level
The positive or negative predisposition to engage in discriminatory behavior
Discrimination
The practice of differential and unequal treatment of others usually racial lines
Authoritarian Personality
Intolerance of weakness in themselves and in others
Social Discrimination
The creation of "social distance" between groups
Institutional discrimination
Unequal treatment in an institution ex: if a restaurant wont hire certain ppl
Scapegoating
Placing blame on others for something that is not their fault
Stereotypes
An oversimplified generalization attributing certain traits or characteristics to a group without regard to individual differences
Ethnophaulisms
A derogatory word or expression used to describe a racial or ethnic group
Ethnic Humor
Used to diffuse tension defining your own ethnic group
