Stephen Douglas
had supported the idea of building the railroad to the pacific Ocean. He favored a line running from Chicago Southerners in Congress did not support douglas's plan because they wannted a Southern route. that ran from new Orleans across Texas to southern California. Douglas was able to get a few key southern states to agree with his plan because he , in turn, opened the new territory west of the Mississippi to slavery.

What was the attack on Lawrence?
In May 1856 a proslavery grand jury in kansas charged leaders of the anti sllavery government with Treason. Around 800 men rrode to lawrence to arrest the antislavery leaders but they had fled. The group took it's anger out on the city of lawrence by setting fires, looting buildings, destroying printing presses used to print antislavery newspapers.

Dred scott Decision
The historic ruling issued by the Supreme Court, about slavery. Having to do with an enslaved man named dred Scott.
Dred Scott
a slave who sued for his freedom in 1846 in the Missouri state courts arguing that he became free when he lived in free territory, the lower court in Missouri ruled in ghis favor, but the Missouri Supreme court did not.

1. African Amer. had no rights slave or free because they were not citizens, 2, Taney ruled that Scott could only be judged as a slave or free according to the stae of Missouri. 3. Judge taney ruled the Missouri Compromise restriction on slavery was unconstitutional which meant Congresss had no right to ban slavery in any teritory.

He said the nation could not remai half slave and half free. Lincoln pressed Douglas on the apparent contradiction between the democrats' belief in popular sovereignty and the Dred Scott decision.
